eliminates the need for any cabling to the instrument. A manufacturer of speciality chemicals based in the West Midlands, Robinson Brothers is trialling the transmitter on the steam main supplying its chemical manufacturing plant. The system was installed by integration specialist ICA Services, which suggested exploring energy harvesting as a way of eliminating cabling costs in future instrumentation schemes at the West Midlands site. The ABB transmitter is powered by an on-board micro-thermoelectric generator (micro-TEG), which is driven by the temperature difference between the steam pipe and the ambient surroundings.

New catalogue facilitates customer product understanding and selection

C

astell has launched a 72-page product catalogue for its main product range of trapped key interlocks, which are typically used with machine guarding and in the switchgear industry. The catalogue is designed to facilitate product, and system, understanding and selection. There are three factors to consider when designing a trapped key interlocking system: the power source being isolated, the number of access points there are and the type of access required. The layout of the catalogue reflects this selection process, enabling customers to choose the right safety system or products according to their specific requirements. An application example is provided for each product to clarify the product’s functions and uses. The catalogue also features new products, a map showing worldwide Castell installations, a product overview and a glossary of trapped key interlocking terminology. Castell’s product range has been developed over 90 years to provide industry with interlocks of high quality and integrity. All products are now well documented via both the recently updated data sheets and the new catalogue.

Alicat Scientific adds USB Convenience to Flow Meter Communication Module

A

licat Scientific, Inc. now offers its BB9 Communication Module in a USB model. The BB9-USB replaces the standard RS-232 serial connection, providing a direct computer connection for monitoring and control of Alicat Flow devices. The BB9 joins up to nine Alicat flow and pressure devices to a single computer for independent monitoring and operation. This remote monitoring saves time and money, especially in flow instrument installations where devices are a long distance from the control site. The BB9 will also distribute power to connected Alicat devices. In installations with more than nine Alicat flow devices, multiple BB9s can control up to 26 Alicat devices. Alicat flow and pressure devices connect to the BB9-USB via Alicat’s eight pin mini din connector and DC-62 cables. The BB9-USB box then plugs into most computers via standard USB port. The BB9’s light, yet rugged, composite chassis can be mounted in almost any location, in any orientation.

ABB drives cut £10,000 off energy bill for steel maker

A in South Yorkshire.

n ABB industrial drive is saving nearly £10,000 a year on energy costs for a steel production plant The

Stocksbridge supplies steel for the aerospace,

Tata Steel plant at oil

and gas industries amongst others. An important part of the finishing process is the scarfer. Taking in lengths of steel ingots/blooms up to 6 metres long and weighing up to five tons, the scarfer uses a propane burner to remove impurities from the steel. The impurities, in the form of waste gases, are then removed by an exhaust fan, run by a 132 kW motor. As well as saving energy costs of around £9,700 per annum, the new drive application also saves 82,500 kg of CO2 and cuts energy use by 165,000 kWh. Following installation, the ABB drive achieved a payback time of less than one year. Originally, the fan was run constantly at full speed, with its output constricted by a damper. Halcyon Drives proposed a 132 kW ABB industrial drive. This is set to run at two speeds, 30 percent on standby duty and 100 percent during scarfing. Running at 30 percent means there is minimum delay when the motor is ramped up to full speed to extract the gases from the scarfer.
