S4 IMHX focuses on logistics for pharma and healthcare

Executives with responsibility for storage, handling and distribution in the pharmaceutical and health care industries will be among thousands of visitors from diverse sectors attending the International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX) next year at the NEC in Birmingham from 19-22 March 2013. The UK pharmaceutical industry achieved a trade surplus of £7 billion in 2009 – a greater contribution to the UK economy than any other industrial sector – and directly employs some 72,000 people. In the healthcare sector, although figures show that spending on healthcare in the UK fell as a per- centage of GDP between 2009 and 2010, it was still £140.8 billion – more than double the figure from a decade earlier. Rob Fisher, IMHX event director for the show's co-organiser, Informa Exhibitions, said: “A number of exhibitors at IMHX 2013 will be showcasing products and expertise geared specifi-

cally towards the needs of the pharma and health- care sector. With thousands of products and services all under one roof, it makes sense for all logistics executives to put the dates in their diaries." The organisers have planned a number of features for the show. The Design 4 Safety competition will return while the AMHSA Zone, hosted by the Automated Material Handling Systems Association, will return even larger than the last show. Visitors will also be able to benefit from an enhanced free-to- attend seminar programme, which will cover a range of hot industry topics. For the first time, the show will feature a Skills & Apprenticeships Zone with particular emphasis on this area on the Friday of the show. The organisers aim to use the event to bring together talented young people and the companies to recruit them.

Training academy drives service levels

Briggs Equipment has launched its learning and development ini- tiative to deliver tailored staff development to all its employees. Heading up the Briggs Academy is Jon Chadwick, who has recently been appointed as learning and development man- ager at the company.

Chadwick said he is looking forward to developing the new approach to training that will be key to the growth of future ser- vices. training courses and what they learn is often forgotten and rarely applied in the workplace. We recognise that everyone has dif- ferent learning styles and train- ing has to be a two way process. Each employee will get support in constructing their own develop- ment plans and will receive train- ing tailored specifically for them. Training incorporates blended learning including one-to-one coaching, shadowing and e-learn- ing which helps them apply what they have learned to their work. www.briggsequipment.co.uk

To achieve sustainability in intralogistics, Toyota Material Handling is exploring energy solutions such as hybrid, fuel cell and Lithium-Ion, and is investing in research and devel- opment of new technologies. Li-ion batteries are said to pro- vide a more effective way to store and supply electricity than lead acid batteries, which often need six to 12 hours to recharge. Toyota is conducting field tests to prove its Li-ion forklifts’ effi- ciency in the distribution centres of Sainsbury's in the UK and Ahold in the Netherlands. The retailers are long-term customers for whom boosting performance and reducing environmental impact are top priorities. Toyota product group manager Johan Rosén said: “Our Li-ion range will be launched in the first half of 2013.” www.toyota-forklifts.co.uk
