Rubb Buildings has supplied new storage facilities for power and gas giant Eon on the Isle of Grain as well as a custom built solution for a manufacturer of non combustible stonewool insulation

ubb Buildings designed, manu- factured and installed a custom overspill storage solution for Rockwool’s state-of-the-art insu- lation production line and packaging facility in South Wales.


Rockwool is a specialist manufac- turer of non-combustible stonewool insulation, with a factory and offices in Pencoed, just outside Bridgend. The mineral wool insulation is used for thermal, fire and acoustic protection. Rubb beat off competition to win the contract to provide a custom structure featuring an assymetrical roof truss. The building includes a 15.25m wide front span for the first 25m of the build- ing’s length. It then extends out to a 20.25m wide span for the remaining 15m of the structure’s length towards the rear gable end. Technical sales engi- neer Ian Mackley says: “We came up with a flexible solution to meet the


specific perimeters set by the client, including higher sidewalls and an extended assymetrical 20m rear gable end. The client also required a 4m wide x 5m high sliding door which we were able to provide. Rockwool liked Rubb’s flexibility of design and approach.” Neil Perry, projects and energy man- ager at Rockwool, says: “Rubb, and in particular Ian Mackley, were very flex- ible with regard to Rockwool’s specific requirements and timescale and pro- vided the best value for money approach and consequently price. The installation team were very profes- sional, quick, and also flexible, to suit Rockwool’s changing demands. The result was an excellent looking and fine, robust structure.”

Rubb Buildings worked with Plant and Consumable Services (PACS) to deliver a new storage facility to power and gas giant Eon-UK. PACS approached Rubb to complete a 16m wide span x 25m long building project for Eon on the Isle of Grain, Rochester, Kent. Rubb had previously worked on the Isle of Grain to provide two twin 40m span structures during the building of the Channel Tunnel back in the early 1990s.

Demand grows for temporary loading canopies T


he need for logistics firms to satisfy manufacturers’ ever-increasing demand for better protection for their goods has fuelled a rise in enquiries for temporary loading canopies. Temporary building manufacturer, supplier and installer Spaciotempo UK says it experienced heavy interest in the canopies from logistics and transport managers who visited its stand at the Multimodal freight transport and logistics exhibition earlier this year. The company, based in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire received enquires about loading canopies, which resemble temporary buildings without walls and are used as shelters for lorries and trucks when they pull up to the loading bay. Scott Jameson, Spaciotempo’s director of sales, says: “The cold and wet weather outside the show was a constant


reminder of the conditions logistics firms face when ensuring that they keep customers’ goods in pristine condition when transporting them. Spaciotempo supplied canopies to a whole host of companies last year, including Jaguar Land Rover and Black Country transport firm Geodis Calberson. The company also reported strong interest in its temporary warehouse and storage buildings and retractable tunnels. Manufactured in-house using an anodised aluminium frame with uPVC panel or steel cladding walls and rigorously tested to high levels of endurance, Spaciotempo’s temporary buildings are said to per- form as well as permanent structures, while still delivering instant and flexible storage space within days. The company is also pioneering temporary buildings supplied as turnkey packages – complete with solid flooring, temperature control, lighting, secure doors and windows, and an eco-friendly thermo-inflated roof. Eon wanted to utilise as much of the existing concrete plot as possible but that presented its own challenges – Rubb had to carefully design and install the structure to avoid all underground service docks and cables at the site. The storage facility features Rubb’s signature post production hot dip gal- vanised steel frame and grey and white PVC coated polyester covering mem- brane. Rubb’s design engineers added a 4m x 4m roller shutter door to the side of the building at the client’s request. John England, power utilities direc- tor at PACS, says: “The project ran very smoothly from start to finish and Eon is delighted with the result. Site safety is paramount on Eon sites and the Rubb team should be praised for its professionalism and safe working throughout the time there.
