Boost for innovation in manufacturing Course cuts risks
Sixteen major new research and development projects that will help to stimulate innovation in the UK’s manufacturing sector are to share government funding of over £6.5 million. The Technology Strategy Board
(
www.innovateuk.org) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (
www.epsrc.ac.uk) are to provide grant funding to support the development of new technolo- gies that have the potential to underpin new production processes in a wide range of industrial applications and market sectors.
The focus of the R&D will be on production technologies that can create high value through novel processes, advanced prod- uct manufacture, and/or resource efficiency improvements. The projects will also encourage the development of technologies that will facilitate greater environ- mental sustainability through efficient disposal, recycling or remanufacture of assets at the end of their useful life. Iain Gray, chief executive of
the Technology Strategy Board, said: “The Technology Strategy
Board has an important role to play, through funding for such collaborative research and devel- opment, helping UK businesses to accelerate the development of new equipment, processes and expertise brought about by tech- nology innovation.”
Professor Dave Delpy, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) chief executive said: “Investment in cutting edge man- ufacturing research and the trans- lation of that into commercial applications is the key to eco- nomic success. EPSRC has a port- folio of 350 live projects and an investment of £380 million in the manufacturing sector.”
Projects will lead to the devel- opment of technologies such as: • An innovative method of con- trolling and optimizing car paint- ing processes;
• Autonomous intelligent machining;
• On-line control of welding processes using ultrasonic test techniques;
• The sustainable and resource efficient cutting of titanium.

A training programme designed to provide managers and others with the knowledge, understanding and skills to improve environ- mental management and sustain- ability performance is available from the British Safety Council. The IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management teaches how to identify the organi- sation’s key environmental risks and implement measures to improve environmental manage- ment systems and procedures. Aimed at anyone with environ- mental responsibilities, the course provides skills required to enhance the organisation’s approach to sus- tainable development.
John Phillips, director of quali- fications and standards at the British Safety Council, said: “This training course not only provides the knowledge and skills to ensure organisations comply with environmental laws and best practice, but also provides the tools required to implement sus- tainable development practices, such as reduced use of energy and raw materials, more efficient use of the supply chain and more sus- tainable products and services.

Building up to the sensing event of the year
Trident Exhibitions, event and conference organisers for over 30 years, and Datateam Business Media, publisher of 30 trade maga- zines including 12 titles in the industrial sector such as Instrumentation have joined forces in the annual Sensing Technology exhibition. Sensing Technology will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from September 25 to 26 while the previously planned Sensors & Systems show at Silverstone in October will now not take place. Trident and Datateam will work together on Sensing Technology and announce the new show for 2013 at this event. This year the show has evolved to cover a much wider instrumentation product area and has been opened up to suppliers and manufacturers of test & measurement prod- ucts and other typers of instrumentation. Sensing Technology is co-located with six other exhibitions, MM, MEMS and NANO, with Mediplas and TCT Live in Hall 3a. The PPMA is also just a hall away.
For those looking for new products or simply the latest information, with the enhanced Sensing Technology 2012 exhibi- tion everything needed will literally be under one roof – from sensors, test and measure- ment equipment, and other types of instru-

mentation; to interesting seminars and knowl- edgeable professionals. The Sensing Technology exhibition is now in its third year, and each has evolved to meet the demands of both exhibitors and visitors.
There are many reasons to attend Sensing
Technology, including: to collect information on specific products; to network with knowl- edgeable professionals; to see the latest devel- opments in the area in which they work; to look at and potentially purchase new equip- ment; to physically see, touch and even try equipment rather than looking at an image in a brochure or on a website; and to see many different companies – and products – in one place at one time.
The Seminar Suite will be another major
focus of the show, providing the opportunity for visitors to hear from professional organisa- tions about a wide range of focused areas, subjects or even views on certain topics. Following each presentation, the floor will be opened up for questions and discussions. Among the companies already booked to attend this year are Techni Measure, Huba Control, Burkert Fluid Systems, Optris, Dewetron, Sensors UK/Flyde, Micro Hybrid Electronic, Martec, Infratec Infrared and Kemo, Burkert Fluid Control Systems, Micro Epsilon UK, National Instruments, Lighthouse (UK), Michell Instruments, Dinder UK, Ixthus Instrumentation, Igus, Impress Sensors & Systems, Strainsense and Sensor Technology.
