Cut costs in the loading bay by showing some restraint, says Thorworld

Preventing metal cable thefts with designed for purpose electrical conduit

generation, M

etal cable theft is now a major problem that faces many industries including power telecommunications,

transportation,

hospitals and local authorities as well as many other sectors.

Causing damage and disruption in all the

markets concerned, huge amounts of money are needed to replace and repair vital equipment. Now, an innovative solution to the problem is available from Adaptaflex, a world leader in electrical conduit systems. The company has developed a range of products that will appeal to all those prone to metal theft.

The solution is based on technologically proven conduit systems covered with various metallic overbraids.

Typically, metal cable covered

with Type PF nylon conduit and a tough overbraiding of stainless steel, presents a far more daunting prospect for the would-be thief as it is virtually impossible to cut quickly, even with a hacksaw.

Just

as importantly for the industries at risk, Type PF is a product with the right specifications for use outside where low temperatures can be encountered.

Mats to reduce fatigue I

t is estimated that half the UK workforce spends four or more hours standing or walking as part of their job. Standing for long periods, particularly on hard floors, causes fatigue, lack of concentration and reduces productivity and can also lead to more serious medical problems such as circulation disorders and joint damage.

One solution is to install and work on specially designed anti-fatigue mats manufactured by Plastic Extruders. The Tuff Spun and Zed Land ranges, for example,

are hard - working mats which reduce fatigue and are comfortable underfoot. They are manufactured from high density foam with a heavy duty bonded top layer which reduces fatigue, provides some slip resistance and makes standing more comfortable.

lobal tool manufacturer Sandvik Coromant has installed black Vynagrip matting with yellow edging in its Cirencester works

(UK). Manufactured by Plastic Extruders, the matting provides employees working in the large production areas with a safe and slip resistant surface underfoot. Vynagrip Plus covers the factory floor with its yellow edging clearly delineating the safe walkway.

The matting was chosen for this application because it can be loose laid and contours over rough and uneven floors which is ideal where floor levels change, slope or cross thresholds. Importantly, the matting is very hard wearing, can be easily rolled up to facilitate cleaning and helps combat the problems of standing fatigue over prolonged periods. The matting’s extra aggressive and deep etched surface, which is resistant to oil, acid and chemicals, achieves a high rating for slip resistant performance (R11, for surfaces with angle of incline between 19 and 27 degrees) when tested to DIN 51130. The open grid allows liquid spills and production waste to fall through, further reducing the risk of slippery. Black Vynagrip is manufactured form 100% REACH compliant post-industrial recycled material and is fully recyclable, making it a sustainable and environmentally-sensitive choice.

operation up to 163°C. The new HT602D01 is ideal for paper machines and similar applications where high humidity and dusty environments would cause problems for alternative charge mode sensors. The sensing element of the HT602D01 provides nominal sensitivity of 100mV/g over a frequency range of 0.5 to 8000Hz (±3dB). Unlike many sensors on the market, PCB Piezotronics’ HT602D01 uses a shear sensing element to minimise the base bending and thermal transient effects that occur in conventional compression mode accelerometers. This renders the HT602D01 accelerometer far less sensitive to unwanted electrical output and leads to more accurate measurement of the actual vibration event. Featuring a 2-pin MIL connector, the sensor can be used as a drop-in replacement for many existing accelerometers but offers the higher temperature range compared with conventional industrial devices. It is priced very competitively against charge mode equivalents and possesses a number of other features that assist in making vibration measurements easier.

systems becomes sole UK distributor for Laweco

Easilift loading

asilift Loading Systems has formalised its arrangement with existing supplier Laweco in a contract that sees the loading bay specialist become sole UK distributor for Laweco’s industry-leading range of scissor lifts and loading platforms. As part of the deal, Laweco UK is being integrated into Easilift’s infrastructure,

E with the

company’s Jon Tridgell becoming Easilift’s new Operations Director. Easilift Loading Systems has supplied Laweco products for a number of years, but the new arrangement enables greater integration to provide total loading bay solutions. "Laweco products are a complementary fit for Easilift’s own range of dock pods, levellers and platforms, so it makes good commercial sense to bring together our products and expertise," explains Jon Tridgell. The company is the UK’s market leader in the supply of double-deck trailer (DDT) loading solutions, and the partnership with Laweco has already seen Easilift supply in excess of 300 DDT lifting platforms into the UK since 2004. With Easilift now Laweco’s sole UK distributor, customers are benefitting from a shortened supply chain. This is borne out by the figures: Easilift Loading Systems has already taken orders for a further 80 Laweco platforms in 2012 so far.

ith continued uncertainty over the economy, austerity remains the watchword for the current Government. Yet, according to loading and unloading equipment specialist Thorworld Industries, the best way for a logistics company to cut costs is by taking a proactive approach to protecting itself from the hidden costs caused by accidents and damage. Thorworld’s extensive product range includes a variety of restraint and protection products designed to minimise the risk of impact or collision, and so protect premises, equipment and people in the loading dock, as well as other loading and unloading areas. The company believes that even the implementation of simple devices such as Dock Bumpers, Wheel Chocks or Vehicle Stoppers can make a huge difference to operational efficiency that will keep costs down and ensure that loading/unloading continues without interruption. Alternatively, the use of Vehicle Stoppers – available in two sizes for cars and lorries – makes an ideal end stop to accurately and safely halt moving vehicles in time to prevent impact with site facilities. Nevertheless, Thorworld believes that it is vital to have the ethos that “prevention is better than the cure.”
