New oil

ater in an oil system can mean trouble. Leading to corrosion, ineffective lubrication, friction and eventually serious damage. So it is good news that sensor market leader ifm electronic now offers a new diagnostic tool in the form of a solid-state oil condition monitor. The new LDH monitor will detect water contamination and indicate the relative percentage of moisture content via the analogue output. This allows an external alarm to set if the water content gets too high, and will also provide data for trending over a period of operation. Oil temperature is of course also a commonly-measured parameter, and the LDHwill also measure this in parallel to the water content and signal this on a second 4 to 20mA output; two devices combined as one. The LDH will operate over a wide range of oil temperatures, from –20 to 120 °C from a standard DC power supply (9 to 33V). ifm is committed to working closely with its customers to develop products which precisely match their needs, and the company provides expert, readily accessible technical support to help users maximise the benefits they gain from ifm products.

he new Crowcon Clip and Clip+ single gas monitors are simple to use and designed with one thing in mind: compliance with regulations and company procedures in the oil and gas industry. Intended for use in hazardous areas, they offer reliable and durable fixed life monitoring in a compact, lightweight and maintenance-free package. Application focused innovations allow hibernation, deliver industry leading alarm time, changeable alarm levels, as well as user friendly gas test and calibration solutions.

‘Clip’ and ‘Clip+’ Single Gas Fixed-Life Monitors T

Ideal for non-specialists such as contractors during

shutdown/turnaround, the Clip and Clip+ monitor for hazardous gases such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO), ensuring workers are protected at all times, whether they are involved in exploration, production or refining. With over 2900 alarm minutes, both the Clip and Clip+ offer a full year of shelf life followed by a two-year run time which includes four minutes of alarm time per day of operation. This ensures that even when a monitoring is regularly gas (bump) tested, or enters alarm whilst in use, the battery still has ample capability to last the 2 year product life.

ABB drives save £27,000 on yarn spinning costs

Ltd, a specialist in the control of textile machinery. Tatham's customer, Milliken, produces cloth for use in tennis balls and billiard tables. The carding machines were driven by existing DC drives controlled by TASC units. The original set up used a 15 kW motor, a 25 kW motor and two 7.5 kW "Tandem Motors" to drive various sections of the machine. These motors were also driving the machine sections directly, shaft to shaft, meaning that the motors were continually running at full load current and sometimes overheating. The new TS drive systems each comprise 4 AC drives using ABB Direct Torque Control (DTC) and new high efficiency AC geared motors. DTC allows complete synchronisation of the machine sections, giving highly accurate control and improved product quality together with the reduced power usage. The solution achieved yearly energy savings of 540,000 kWh which has reduced the energy bill by £27,000, while cutting CO2 emissions by 292,000 kg/year. Payback for the system was just over 10 months.

It benefits OEMs by making it no longer necessary to set each individual unit if the parameters are the same each time. IFM’s Memory Plug stores the settings and uploads them to each new device automatically. The Memory Plug is also said to be useful where sensors need to be replaced as a back-up of the parameters is ready to install.

Key features • Write protection is available to prevent the loss of saved settings. • The plug comes with a robust housing with IP67 rating and standard M12 connectors.

DuPont celebrates Techplast, winner of the 2012 EMEA Kevlar® Innovation Award

uPont Protection Technologies is pleased to announce the winner of the DuPont™ Kevlar® Innovation Awards, which showcase ideas, methods, technologies, applications, products and services using DuPont™ Kevlar® in a new way. This year’s EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) award was bestowed to Techplast, a company based in Poland, for their innovative use of Kevlar® in SAFER® ultra-light composite cylinders. The award criteria focused on the use of DuPont™ Kevlar® with new materials or new processing technologies and the creativity in the use of DuPont™ Kevlar® in new applications. It also considered the innovation’s capacity to enhance protection of people, processes or the environment, as well as the entrant’s collaboration with DuPont or other companies and organizations. The DuPont™ Kevlar® Innovation Award was judged by a prestigious panel of experts: Professor Richard Schilling of Reutlingen University in Germany; Nick Brown, Editor in Chief at Jane's International Defence Review; and Beatrice Moureaux, Technology Manager for DuPont Protection Technologies. The panel conferred the award to Techplast for their use of Kevlar® in SAFER®, a new generation of pressurized cylinders for lighter and safer gas storage.
