ABB survey reveals attitudes to instrumentation


survey by ABB into the use of process instrumentation has produced a snapshot of how process instrumentation users employ their instruments, as well as their thoughts on the use of intelligent instrument and their attitudes to upgrading and investing in their control systems.The survey of 43 companies found that the largest proportion of plant control systems are up to 10 years old, with 46.5% of system falling into to this category. Another substantial proportion, 39.5%, is between 11 and 20 years old, with only small minorities being older than this. Survey respondents were also asked about what percentage of their process instrumentation was intelligent, i.e. based on protocols such as HART, Fieldbus and Profibus. Just over 51% of respondents said that between 10 and 20 % of their instrumentation has this type of intelligence, while three equal sized groups of 16.3% chose the option of 21-40%, 41-60% and 60%+. Some 56.8% of companies answering said that they used this intelligence, while 43.2% do not. Of those that do use it, over 77% employ it to aid instrument maintenance. Other categories are plant optimization (54.5%), early event warning (54.5%), preventive maintenance (63.6%) and environmental compliance (63.6%).

New Spirax Sarco insulation jackets save energy, cut costs, improve safety, are easy to order, instant to fit and have a long life – what’s not to like?


Spirax Sarco is launching insulation jackets tailored for pipeline equipment, such as valves, steam traps and flowmeters. The jackets promise long life with no


degradation in insulating effectiveness, enabling steam system operators to save energy and reduce carbon emissions with minimum hassle. Insulating steam systems is the most cost-effective energy-saving measure that operators can make. Yet many steam traps, valves and other equipment are left uncovered to allow easy access for maintenance. Typically, a non-insulated steam trap will lose about as much heat as a one metre length of bare one inch diameter pipe, equating to a loss of £170 per year. Steam systems are often populated with 100 or more traps and valves, which, if not insulated, can mean several thousands of pounds in lost energy annually. The new insulation jackets can reduce this heat loss by up to a factor of 12. Most sites will see a payback on the jackets within six to 18 months. Tailored for specific products, the jackets are fastened with Velcro straps, making them quick to fit and easy to remove for access to the pipeline equipment when needed. The jackets also improve site health and safety by protecting personnel from contact with hot surfaces and help to create a cooler working environment.

Steel maker set to save £68,000 on pumping energy costs with ABB drives


A


specialist steel manufacturer in Rotherham is set to save £68,000 a year on the energy costs of pumping applications following the installation of five ABB industrial drives. The Tata Steel plant produces speciality steels for customers with demanding applications in aerospace, oil and gas, power generation and the manufacture of industrial bearings. ABB Drives Alliance member Halcyon Drives supplied, installed and commissioned three, 90 kW and two 75 kW ABB industrial drives to control critical pumping applications at the plant. Rated at IP55 to stop the ingress of dust and moisture, the


drives with in-built intelligent pump function, multi-pump control, ensures that the optimum number of pumps is running to satisfy the process demand and brings a backup pump online in the event of a pump failure. As part of its energy saving plan, Tata Steel identified its flume flush pumps and filter feed pumps as prime candidates for energy efficiency improvements.
