New loop powered Rate Totalisers

B

EKA associates new field and panel mounting loop-powered 4/20mA Rate Totalisers have large easy to read displays which can simultaneously show rate and total flow in engineering units.

All models

include a root extractor, lineariser and calibrator with optional dual alarms and a backlight that can be loop or separately powered. Field mounting models have a robust IP66 GRP enclosure with an armoured glass window and a separate terminal compartment making them suitable for installation in harsh industrial environments. Panel mounting models have a 144 x 72 DIN enclosure with an IP66 front panel. In addition to general purpose models, versions are available with ATEX, IECEx, and FM intrinsic safety certification permitting installation in gas and dust hazardous areas.

For lower risk Zone 2 or 22

applications, field mounting models with Ex nA and Ex tc approval permit installation without the need for Zener barriers or galvanic isolators significantly reducing installation cost.

meet record demand for boiler operator training. The number of delegates taking the Spirax Sarco Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) course has tripled since the second half of 2011. The rise in demand has been prompted by boiler operators and managers seeking to enhance their knowledge of steam management systems in line with the recommendations of BG01 ‘Guidance on Safe Operation of Boilers’. Published in late 2011, BG01 recommends specific training to promote safe and competent boiler operations. This includes Certified Industrial Boiler Operator (Cert.IBO) status for operators and Diploma in Boiler Plant Operation Management (Dip.BOM) for managers. These are both covered in Spirax Sarco’s BOAS training course. Numbers are also up significantly for BOAS refresher courses. Increasing by 400% between the last two quarters of 2011 and the first two quarters of 2012, the growing numbers reflect a need to continue the development of previously trained staff to keep their knowledge up to date.

Current demand for boiler operator training is unprecedented Spirax Sarco is adding more training courses to its schedule to

Lafarge monitors critical instruments remotely with wireless adapters

L

afarge Plasterboard can monitor critical field instruments remotely from the plant control room following the introduction of FieldKey wireless adapters

from ABB. The Bristol factory took part in a successful trial of prototype wireless adapters from ABB early last year, and has now followed up with the installation of several commercial FieldKey units. These are used to check the performance of critical instruments, and are moved around the site to monitor any instruments that engineers suspect may be experiencing a problem.

FieldKey adapters are quick and easy to fit to any instruments equipped with 4-20mA HART communications. On the Lafarge site, for example, they are used with equipment from at least three different manufacturers. The adapters are small and have a rotating antenna, enabling them to be fitted into extremely tight spaces if necessary. They also use energy harvesting, taking power from the 4-20mA loop, so they don't need batteries. With no need for hardwiring to the network, each FieldKey can be installed in under three minutes, eliminating the need for a plant shutdown and any consequent impact on the existing control system.

Burst detection system receives IECEx approval

Flo-Tel™+. Flo-Tel™+ is the only non-invasive, fail-safe detection system on the market. Offering a wide range of benefits to customers in safety-critical environments, Flo-Tel™+ can be either hardwired or used in conjunction with Elfab’s fail-safe wireless detection system, Radio-Tel™. Modern industrial automation has increased the need for electrical equipment in hazardous areas, where flammable liquids, vapours, gases or combustible dusts could present a fire or explosion hazard. The use of equipment, especially electrical, in these areas is highly regulated. IECEx approval ensures that equipment and systems are manufactured and operated according to the highest international safety standards. At a time when stringent safety standards are of utmost importance, Flo-Tel™+ offers unprecedented advantages, from triggering alarms to shutting down a process.

Time-of-flight sensor now with enhanced light immunity

extraneous light sources such as the sun. This compact and affordable sensor will still operate up to 10m, with switched or analogue signals, can happily be subjected to conditions like a bright summer’s day; that is it will not be adversely affected by 10,000 lux. In addition to outdoor applications or installations where skylights let in direct sunshine, this feature also means that highly reflective objects will not interfere with the sensing. High visibility clothing is often needed in the workplace, but optical sensors can be very sensitive to it, over longer distances, than one might expect. Not so with the upgraded O1D. All versions of the O1D are currently being updated, whether they are the standard combined switch and analogue, simple switching units, or the longer range 75m version. All other features, be that window functions or scalable analogue, remain as before. ifm is committed to working closely with its customers to develop products which precisely match their needs, and the company provides expert, readily accessible technical support to help users maximise the benefits they gain from ifm products.

PMX measurement system honored with MessTec & Sensor

Masters Award

HBM's innovative PMX Test &

amplifier platform has been honored with second place in the

Measurement category at the MessTec & Sensor Masters Award 2012. The new measurement system is the ideal solution for numerous metrological tasks in the production environment. True to its motto "Fit to Function," the scalable system provides the user with precisely those functionalities required for the application. HBM's products are based on current standards such as Industrial Ethernet with real-time Ethernet protocols Ethercat and Profinet. That means PMX measurement systems are also easy to integrate into modern automation systems. The measuring amplifier processes measured signals internally in real time. Typical applications include monitoring manufacturing processes such as fitting or pressing. The robust system is designed modularly and can be easily expanded if a plant is modified, thereby ensuring the user's investment will be secure in the future. The honor was awarded at the MessTec & Sensor Masters event at the beginning of March in Stuttgart. The award highlights especially innovative new development products. Instead of a jury, the public decides which prizes are awarded.
