NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

A positive parking story? That is good news but, says Sarah Juggins, sometimes a low profile is a good sign

I

t is the start of the holiday season, but as I write this article it is pouring down with rain. There has also been an unexpectedly muted level of excitement regarding Euro 2012, not helped by the fact that England didn’t make it past the quarter finals – but then, did we really expect anything more?

The Olympic coverage switches from hyped-up excitement about our medal prospects to downright despondency about the negative impact of the Games on travel, tourism, the economy and any other aspect of life in the UK.

But one story that has made

the headlines, much to my astonishment, is a positive parking story! This is so rare that friends and acquaintances have been sending me cuttings of the article.

The story is, of course, the return of parking enforcement to the Welsh town of Aberystwyth after a year of motoring chaos. The story appears on our local authority pages, but it is interesting that the mainstream press have been prepared to give such space to a positive parking story. This should act as

encouragement for all of us in the sector to be proactive about getting good news stories in the press.

Good parking

management is a bit like good hygiene – if it is working, you don’t notice it

Mind you, a very wise person said to me that good parking management is a bit like good hygiene – if it is working well you don’t notice it; it is only when things go wrong that a stink is raised (intentional pun) – as Aberystwyth has so dramatically proven. So maybe the best situation for parking is a complete absence from the national media.

Summer fun

Finally, the summer may be a washout, but there is still plenty going on in the next

three months. The Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a focal point in the capital and, combined with numerous periphery events such as music festivals, food festivals and art exhibitions, the parking teams in the London Boroughs will be particularly busy keeping the roads moving.

It is usual to wish everyone ‘happy holidays’, but this year I am wishing those parking teams a stress-free holiday season – with exceptionally high levels of hygiene!
