50 JULY 2012

The mayor of Ithaca, a town in upstate New York, USA has turned his alloted parking space into an environmentally friendly ‘park space’ and has invited local people to come and enjoy the results. At 25, Svante Myrick is the youngest person to hold the post of mayor in the town and he has quickly made his way onto the front pages of both the local and national press with his green plans for the highly-coveted space. Since becoming mayor, he has added benches, tree stump seats, plants and fl owers to the tarmac area.

Myrick walks to work and his parking space stood unused all week. When he needs a car, he uses a local car-share programme. He posted his plans on Facebook, and wrote: ‘I’ll be out here watering it on the weekends.’

Myrick is one of the 15 per

cent of Ithaca residents who walk to work. ‘I love to drive a car,’ he said, ‘But most of the work I do is within a two-mile radius. So I thought the least I could do was give up my car and I sold it about three years ago now. That left me with a redundant space; a perk of the job but one I have no need of.

‘The answer to too many cars is not necessarily more parking spaces… We can change traffi c patterns and parking behaviours by providing alternative methods of transportation which are more affordable, reliable and convenient,’ he wrote on his campaign website. ‘I have a real interest in keeping Ithaca among the most bike-friendly places in the nation,’ he added. ‘Cities where residents walk and ride bikes are cities where local businesses can thrive and community sense is fostered.’
