“I suppose my Killer Sound is my twist on the dance music I grew up on, Detroit techno and Chicago house. To achieve this I use a Mac running Logic and Ableton. Most of what I do is in the computer, except for a few well-chosen analog synths. I think most things can be done really well in the box, but there’s nothing like a good analog bass, lead or arp. I have a Moog Voyager, Studio Electronics ATC-1, Alesis Andromeda A6, Waldorf Pulse, Roland SH-101 and a Roland TB-303 to cover the analog sound palette I need, although I think it’s worth noting that the progress that some of the soft synths have made now is mind-blowing. Personally, I would keep an ear out for the FXpansion DCAM synths, especially the strobe. “The technology used to develop these plug-ins speaks for itself. Rather than modelling just the output signal, they choose to model every individual component of an analog synth. I think the results are awesome. “Also worth mentioning is the new U-he Diva synth, which, although I don’t own it yet (it is on my shopping list) sounds incredible, using industrial circuit simulators in real-time. Both these packages utilise methods not used before in recreating that analog sound in software, which I think is represented well by the final results.”
SAMPLE TANK:Zero G Modular Beats
ZERO G return with Modular Beats, a collection of analog drum loops and grooves put together by Roger Grønberg, a sound designer from Norway who specialises in physical modelling and sound invention. With the sole purpose of creating a sample library of drum sounds that really does stand out from the usual sample packs on the market, the unique aspect of this library is that the drum sounds were created using only modular synthesizers and analog monosynths. No samples or drum machines were used to make the grooves, loops, kicks, hits and percussion sounds found in this pack. It’s divided up into various categories that define roughly the genre and the era that the sounds and loops arise from. Producers will then know roughly the type of sounds that are being portrayed. For instance, the sound set ‘1977’ has quite an industrial feel to it, and represents the new-wave electronic music of Sheffield, the city that bands like the Human League and Cabaret Voltaire sprang from.
There are over 21 folders of loop sounds as well as a healthy amount of one-shot samples covering a range of electronic music genres. A lot of time and effort has gone into making this unique-sounding pack. With over 1.5Gb of original sounds, 400 loops, 400 single hits and 300 modular drum kit instruments, this is an extensive collection of samples. Modular Beats comes in all the usual sampler formats and can either be purchased as a boxset or as a download.
