JORIS VOORN In the bag....

ONE of the leading figures of the tech house guard during the mid-’00s, Joris Voorn is no opportunistic tagalong. He’s constantly moving forward, trying new things in a bid to redefine his sound and in the process, main room dance music. Flirting with straight-up techno, muscular house and progressive forms of both for over a decade, he’s served as a deft architect of hard-edge percussion, always with an open ear for fresh ideas. Releasing on his own Green and Rejected (co-run alongside Edwin Oosterwal), as well as Sven Väth’s Cocoon along the way, his recent ‘Cocoon

‘The Same Thing (Huxley Dub)’ More Music

“Huxley is one of the best new house producers around, raw beats and chunky basslines. This dub mix is my favourite. The bassline after the second break is where it’s at.”

‘Wave 2081 (Joris Voorn Secret Mix)’ Unreleased

“I make a lot of edits for my sets, but this is more like a new track. I’ve used various loops and breaks of the original (very progressive-sounding) track and made it into a techno version that sounds a little like my own track ‘The Secret’.”

Heroes’ mix (double-sided, with one from Cassy) nudged his progress even further forward. Mixing up garage- informed house (Youandewan), melodic deep house (Guy Gerber) and pure techno (Radio Slave), Joris displays what he is best at — joining the dots between melody and groove, always with both eyes on working the dancefloor.

“I’m changing all the time, as music is changing too,” he affirms. “There are phases when I play certain kinds of tracks a lot, and then move along again. At the moment, I like to go a bit deeper than before, some more techno

‘Bling It Up!’ Rejected

“To be released soon, this amazing house track by Steve. It’s been on the shelf for two years, but now sees the light of day!”

Technasia

‘Heart Of Flesh’ Cadenza

“Quite a strong release for Cadenza, but one of the highlights of my sets for almost nine months. Two unexpectedly heavy, build-up breaks coming out of nowhere and destroying every dancefloor any- where…”

‘Thelema’ Aras

“One of the deeper techno tracks in my sets, but with a break that sets off like fireworks at any party, if played at the right moment!”

‘Goodbye Fly’ Rejected

“This was kind of an accident and not supposed to be released, I made it for NYE at Amsterdam United to open the new year. The video generated so many questions! What song it was, and by whom? So I decided to get it out on Rejected.”

tunes in my sets and more melodies, too. There will always be the steady drive, though.”

Perhaps most revered for his talent as a DJ, his sets — programmed on Traktor, allowing him to enhance variety and craft his own climaxes live — are as fun as they are experimental.
