TRAITS TOP THREE CLUBS

01.MINT CLUB LEEDS, ENGLAND “There’s a really good vibe there. It’s small and intimate and it has a low roof, but the lighting in there is so cool, visually it’s a stunning club.”

02. FABRIC LONDON, ENGLAND “Obviously!”

03. ZIRCA SINGAPORE “As far as superclubs go, this is one place that is just really well done. The people there are so hospitable and the atmosphere is off the scale.”

RESIDING in a city more renowned for its arty noise raves than its electronic dance nightlife, Circus Afterhours bats for the more nocturnal of Montreal’s clubbing population. Starting around 2am, it’s a common feature for night owls looking for beats but unwilling to settle for the R&B fodder offered elsewhere in the city. Those patient enough wait to do so because they know the best is yet to come, packing themselves into this burrow of debauchery to throw shapes to the likes of Digweed, W&W and Orjan Nilsen until midday. Spread over two rooms and fitted with a Funktion One soundsystem loud enough to register on the Richter scale, Circus Afterhours proffers one of the greatest club shows on earth.

ROW 14 BARCELONA, SPAIN

row14.es

NEW ENTRY

THE highest new entry in this year’s new poll, Row 14 has clearly made quite an impression over the past 12 months, rocketing in at No.17. Not that it’s brand-new; opening in 2009 off a dusty freeway in Barcelona, its newfound recognition among knowledgeable house and techno heads can largely be attributed to its Sunday afternoon party El Row, host to the likes of Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin and Loco Dice since setting up shortly after Sonar in 2010. Revered in the city for bringing the wonky hedonism of DC10 together with the wild playfulness of Bangface, the use of a retractable roof and a skip-load of Poundland party paraphernalia is always enough to raise Row 14’s sultry atmosphere to volcanic levels, winning plenty of hearts in the process.

CIRCUS AFTERHOURS MONTREAL, CANADA

IT’S not all “Ayia Napa, Ayia Napa” when it comes to Cyprus clubbing. Guaba, in the island’s second city Limassol, is flying the flag for a more discerning sound. With a bias towards trance, progressive and tech house beats, it’s had Steve Lawler, Mat Zo, Andy Moor and Gabriel & Dresden recently, who fly in to play the world-famous Sunday parties on their capacious and well-appointed outdoor beach terrace, a necessarily airy delight in the baking Cypriot heat. Replete with slick production and crazy-looking dudes in masks blasting ice cannons from the elevated booth, Guaba is a bastion of high-grade clubbing quality. For 2012, it’s had a refurb, with the beach area spruced up in anticipation of another insane season. “Guaba has a very special atmosphere. Great vibe, nice people, fantastic weather, you can’t ask for more!” says Shane 54. “It’s one of the best beach bars in the whole world, the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon at.”

PACHA NEW YORK CITY, NY, USA

CAPACITY: 3000 pachanyc.com

NOWin its sixth year, Pacha NYC brings all the list-and- bottle class and unbridled joy expected of the two cherries. A platform for both established local DJs and foreign talent to bring it to a city soaked to the bone with rave heritage but checked by unfulfilled promise, this ornate filing cabinet of frivolity has existed as a beacon of light since setting up shop off the back of a second wave of club crackdowns in 2006. A regular for the likes of Erick Morillo and Danny Tenaglia, Pacha kept NY’s dwindling embers alive during difficult times, and now sits poised to rise like a phoenix from the roaring flames of the US’s newly reignited club scene.

DC10 IBIZA, SPAIN

circolocoibiza.com

RE-OPENING two years ago after a year of closure, it hasn’t taken long for this abandoned old airport hangar to rediscover its raucous reign of eminence over the White Isle. Still home to its beloved Circoloco parties and the religious walking ground for a roster of residents that promoters are bending over backwards to book elsewhere, DC10 is still the prized pinnacle for any DJ with underground credentials. Shifting away from the minimal sound it helped pioneer during the mid ‘00s to embrace a more funky, disco-informed side of house, the addition of Kerri Chandler as a resident, along with the pledged alliance of the likes of Jamie Jones, Clive Henry and Dyed Soundorom, has ensured that DC10 remains the first (and last) stopping point for any sun-kissed raver on the island looking to lose their funky minds.
