APPROACHINGtwo decades of dance, Studio Martin has forged a blazing trail in Romanian clubbing, bringing legends such as Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills to the country for the first time to help open up ears and minds. The inspiration behind James Lavelle’s 2002 ‘Global Underground Romania’, a mix of breaks, progressive house and tech, the club continues to push the freshest music and most contemporary labels, recent guests including Art Department, Maceo Plex, Laura Jones, Mirko Loco, dOP and Maayam Nidam to help it shoot back up the poll ahead of local rivals Kristal.

INa club scene overrun by champagne-swigging aristocrats and stiletto-heeled glamour queens, it’s refreshing to see the ascent of a Brazilian den reserved for more demure dancefloor sounds. Emerging in 2001 to bring Hernan Cattaneo and Layo & Bushwacka! to the south-eastern city of Curitiba, Club Vibe closed its doors for renovations in 2008 to open in 2010 with a cosmic panel of LEDs in all their atmospheric glory. Since, it has welcomed Subb-an, Wolf + Lamb and Lee Foss to its galactic lunar abode, scoring itself a spot in the poll in the process.

THEjewel in the crown of Leeds’ ludicrously active club circuit, Mint Club set the ball rolling back in ‘97, helped along by Dave Beer and his resident raveathon Back To Basics. Today, defined by the quality of its regular parties — the likes of high-end deep house night Louche, techno staple System and future garage newbie Absentminds — as much as it is by the Watergate-inspired LED ceiling, The Mint has proven itself to be much more than just the flavour of the month.

THE Chinese doctrine of Tao is a path to enlightenment, so its use as the name of a club in Las Vegas, home to busty women and buffed-up topless men cavorting to the likes of 50 Cent and DJ Vice, is a tad incongruous. But then, given that Las Vegas has become a hotspot for weaning US high-rollers off rock and onto the sound of dance music, perhaps there’s a hidden logic to it. With a 40-foot-long outside terrace, go-go dancers and a booming soundsystem, if you’re ever in town, watch out for the likes of Kim Kardashian, who spent her birthday there.

A jewel in the crown of the Opium Group, Set revels in the glamour of ‘30s Hollywood excess, a time back in the public consciousness thanks to the Oscar-sweeping The Artist. In true Miami style, the owners include a former GQ cover star and the son of Mick Jones from The Clash, giving some idea of the clientele attracted to a venue that includes baby croc and leather interiors, a glass fireplace, vacuum-compressed elevators and vintage Tinseltown-era artefacts; this ain’t no warehouse rave. Throw in guests like Joris Voorn, Maceo Plex, Deetron and Solomun and you have a musical sophistication to match the décor.

LOCATED off the beaten track of an area of London that has little else to offer other than a massive roundabout, giant subway and a tatty old shopping centre (and Ministry of Sound, of course), Corsica Studios is an unlikely hub for The Big Smoke’s most cultured club activity. Proudly represented by our Best Of British Best Club Night 2011, monthly party Trouble Vision, and a regular stopping ground for Bill Brewster’s Low Life events, it’s at the top of the list of any serious promoter making waves in the capital.
