FOSS TOP THREE CLUBS

01. DC10 IBIZA, SPAIN “It’s just the place that brought me into this, that made me want to be a DJ 10 years ago. I don’t think the energy there can be recreated.”

02. FABRIC LONDON, ENGLAND “Its attention to detail, sound and professional- ism give it a level of quality that is sort of unheard of in an industry that is sometimes driven by mind-altering substances. Everything is always done the right way there.”

03. WARUNG CAMBORIÚ, BRAZIL “I played Warung for the first time last month, but it was an incredible expe- rience. I think it kind of sums up everything that’s great about Brazil, all its beauty and warmth.”

SUB CLUB GLASGOW, SCOTLAND

FEW institutions carry as much weight as Glasgow’s Sub Club. Revered for its supreme sound and extreme levels of intimacy, this sultry bunker is a well-deserved feature of this poll each year. Leading promotion Sensu has gone from strength- to-strength over the past 12 months, with an appearance from techno guru Raresh last month, while Harri and Domenic’s weekly Subculture parties continue to bring the Chicago house and Detroit techno without showing signs of tiring, and Twitch & Wilkes’ beloved everything-in-the-pot Optimo parties enjoyed a rare reunion at the end of March. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

THE hyper-speed reinvention of Las Vegas as a clubbing Nirvana continues apace. Time to add a new name to the list of mega venues with Haze — the Aria casino resort’s panacea to the other surrounding superclubs that are sprouting up all over the city. Haze has its own parade of USPs that raise it into the big leagues. It’s a big ol’ place, for one: there’s 25,000 square feet of it. Hi-tech, phantasmagoric light shows; an Avalon-designed soundsystem (did you think they’d pinch pennies in Vegas?!); suede walls and slick interiors throughout; this venue brings the luxurious, OTT elements of Las Vegas into the realm of clubbing with spectacular results. But what about the DJs? Well, their recent guests have included everyone from Boys Noize to Chromeo, Bob Sinclar to Diplo. Pretty much all bases covered, then. “Haze is the real deal, it’s the only club where I feel at home in Las Vegas,” Laidback Luke accedes.

NOW that’s consistency for you. A yearly shoe-in for the poll, Plastic People has only nudged one spot since last year; a statistic that’s testament to the week-in-week-out quality of this snug, pitch-black room that continues to fly the flag for East London’s night scene. Still the living quarters of Rinse FM’s Thursday night soiree FWD, Ali Tillett’s rapidly spreading Warm brand and a frequent stopping ground for the Y3K funk of Floating Points, you know what you are getting at Plastic People — and it’s always shit-hot.

NEW ENTRY

RESPONSIBLEfor pushing some of the most powerful juggernauts treading the globe today, it’s often easy to overlook the salubrious sonics bubbling beneath the Dutch dance scene’s mainstream. For all the big-room antics of Afrojack or the aeroplane-arm gliding of Armin, lest we forget that Amsterdam is also home to Rush Hour Records, the yearly ADE party season and, of course, a plethora of high-end underground clubs, including this (not so) little gem. A relative newbie to the city, Air only opened in April 2010 but clearly hasn’t struggled to nestle its way into discerning affections. During March 2012 alone, it almost burst its seams thanks to the tectonic shakings of Anthony Rother, Noir and Audiojack (to name only a few), with Switch and Horse Meat Disco lined up for April.

WITHevery detail subtly imbued with a high-tech edge, from the amniotic, cosseting, enveloping sound, to the truly sci-fi laser light FX, Womb is in another league entirely. But ultimately, if you were to remove the adornments, you’d be in a large dark space. With the best techno and house DJs playing. And one of the friendliest, most inclusive crowds we’ve ever come across. “Womb is one of my favourite clubs in the world. The soundsystem is hard to beat, and the crowd are inspiring and just lovely. I always have a fantastic time, get to meet amazing people and get taken care of very well. A night at Womb is very special and unforgettable,” says Anja Schneider.
