Malcolm Middleton 1985 (Miaoux Miaoux
Remix) Chemikal Underground 8.5
Emotive, spacey Italo- disco refix from the canny Miaoux Miaoux. Sounding like it was produced in Bologna around the genre’s golden era of ‘84-’85. Top stuff.
DMX Krew
Decaying World EP Wavey Tones 9.5
DMX Krew makes a welcome return to this page with a dazzling four-track EP of spacey, acid ‘disco-tech’ for Wavey Tones’ second release.
Firas
Just You Body Work 9.5
Killer electro fix of Cassie’s ‘Just You’ by one half of Caze Nove, Firas, harking back to the golden era of mid- ’80s freestyle/proto- house.
Soft Rocks Little Lights/Wicker
Man ESP Institute 8.0
Cos/Mes and Lexx remix two tracks by the ever-reliable, UK-based Soft Rocks crew. The highlight here is Lexx’s killer mix, sounding a little like the dub version of Grace Jones’ ‘Private Life’.
Damon Martin That Ain’t Right (Waze & Odyssey/Legendary
Children Remixes) Disco Bloodbath
10
Cult London-based entertainment collective Disco Bloodbath ready their new label with a release from founding member, Damon Martin. A cool vocal hook jockeys a slow house rhythm, with haunting synths set to darken the mood somewhat. With this in mind, my personal favourite producers of the moment, Waze & Odyssey, drop a killer old school, Murk- style dub, whereas Legendary Children heat things up with their more acidic version.
Alan Hurst
Nzambi (Remixes) Emotional Response 8.5
SCOTT FRASERWORLD UNKNOWN / BIRD SCARER 01. VARIOUS ARTISTS‘Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974-
1984’ Chocolate Industries “My soundtrack for the summer of 2012, note scenes of grown men grinning like teenagers in the studio... quite simply an amazing album.”
02. TIMOTHY J. FAIRPLAY‘Somebody Somewhere EP’Emotional
Response “Outrageously good release from the basement’s answer to John Carpenter.”
03. VARIOUS ARTISTS‘The Modern Electronic Element Serie 2’Nation “Consistently played this all year, hats off to Baris K for ‘200’ in particular.”
04. SCOTT FRASER FEAT YULA FENN‘Shadow Dancing’Astrolab “Warehouse action from me for the Treasure hunting CD, I don’t know how Laurent has
managed to assemble all of these people for this album, but he has, extraordinaire!” 05. MAX ESSA‘Burning Palms (Hardway Bros. Shoulder Of Orion
Remix)’ Is It Balearic? “Great track from Max and one of Mr Johnston’s finest to date I wager, destroying a dancefloor near you this summer.”
06. DANIEL AVERY‘Movement EP’ Throne Of Blood “Brilliant EP from Dan on a great label complete with a dubbed-out masterclass like
only Mr Weatherall can...”
07. ANALOG ROLAND ORCHESTRA‘Home LP’Ornaments “Proper music for dancing done on real gear like it should be... buy!”
08. SEMTEK‘Bento (Scott Fraser’s Decompression Dub)’Awkward
Movements “The fine upstanding Mr Roth-Lehmann of Don’t Be Afraid gets 12 minutes of Murk meets Adrian Sherwood via the basement treatment from me.”
09. LOS LOPEZ‘Are You A Lesbian? (Mugwump Basement Remix)’Days
Of Being Wild “Hot off the press of the impeccable G. Mugwump, delivering another fine remix via his basement... dark, sleazy and full of the funk.”
10. IMPLOG‘Holland Tunnel Drive’ Infidelity “One for Joe and Andy, for me the sound of World Unknown beautifully captured...
outstanding tripped-out utter madness, I defy you not to dance to this!”
Big month ahead for Emotional Response; firstly, their aforementioned Timothy J Fairplay release and this digest of remixes of tracks from Alan Hurst’s forthcoming ‘Nzambi’ album. Kranky Records’ Jonas Reinhardt turns out a lush, dreamy, kosmische-style version that could have been taken from Klaus Schulze’s Innovative Communication label. Elsewhere, the ever reliable, ever busy Tim Fairplay weighs in his contribution in vocal and instrumental format, and finally, Terreke closes with a proto-house-style dub.
Baio
Sunburn EP Greco-Roman
8.0 Chris Baio takes a moment moonlighting from Vampire Weekend for this solo venture. As you might expect from the title, the mood of this release gears itself away from the darkened corners of a basement club in favour of a more al fresco dancefloor experience. With the addition of a Matias Aguayo collaboration, this perky, very Balearic-sounding disco/house tune will no doubt be a regular spin at the festivals over the coming summer.
Claws For?
Profumo (Gosub Remix) DBA Dubs 9.0
Reliable house and techno imprint Don’t Be Afraid extend their reach
with their DBA Dubs offshoot — this being the inaugurating release from Modern Soul/DC Recordings artist, Claws For?. Sophisticated in its arrangement, ‘Profumo’ will charm the dancefloor with a rubbery boogie bassline and almost giddying Moog phrases. This release is also backed with a killer electro fix from Miami’s future bass machine, Gosub, who tempers the mood with some synthesized blues licks.
Various Artists
Nickel Ride Cómeme 8.5
Following the industrial throb of Isaac Johan’s brilliant, nonconformist debut for the label comes this EP with some familiar names and new artists now added to the roster. DJs Pareja, from Buenos Aires, air their second release, this time with ‘Tacha’, high-voltage house music underpinned by their signature tribal drums. Elsewhere, newcomer Sano drops two tracks of indigenous Colombian house music while Capracara works with The District Union rhythm section for a relentless no-wave track with some tough, ESG-style drumming. As a total surprise to this release, History Clock’s Nathan Wilkins teams up with none other than the legendary Richard X for the sleazy, cut ‘n’ paste workout, ‘Shake’, as Cowboy Rhythmbox.
Mighty Mouse
Disco Battle Weapons 2 Cheap Thrills 7.0
Injecting a bit of hi-gloss into Herve’s fidgeting Cheap Thrills
www.djmag.com
label, here come the Mighty Mouse boys with their breed of robust, yet equally melodic, modern disco sound. Four tracks competently manage elements of boogie and electro-funk, with spiralling arpeggios, loose percussion and disco effects; suitably produced to work the expectations of a more demanding dancefloor.
Q-Chip/Cestrian
Split Bunker 9.0
Faithfully dedicated to the darker reaches of techno, minimal wave, industrial and EBM, Bunker, into their 10th year, release this split EP from Q-Chip and Ali Renault as Cestrain (fresh from his Unknown To The Unknown debut last month). Four tracks from each occupy a side, with Q-Chip serving up a tasty Metroplex/ Model 500-style homage; but it’s Cestrian’s effort that steals the show, taking cues from the likes of Drexciya and Italian minimal wave to add to his dark, sonic brew.
Timothy J. Fairplay
Somebody, Somewhere EP Emotional Response 9.5
Tim pops up for a breather from deep inside Andrew Weatherall’s studio to offer his latest for this rather sharp-sounding label of the moment, Emotional Response. Four tracks of Tim’s typically unique, analogue-rich, half- stepping synthwave draw a line between Carpenter and Legowelt, even to the early dubstep of Digital Mystikz and Loefah. All very brilliant, and rather unique.
