course I reference the lyrics sung by Billy Ocean but, taken another way, the meaning of this phrase is 'when the situation becomes difficult, the strong will work harder to meet the challenge.' During these tough economic times everything can seem so much more of a ‘hard slog’, often just to achieve the same result as before. But it can sometimes be in our approach to tackling these hard times that we find greater success or a more fulfilling sense of achievement. Is it the sense of just having got through it or is it that we have tapped into a different skill set we may have had to develop or pulled on different resources for support?
re-energised from the two days away from my desk. It is often hard to justify the time when we are all so busy. When you look at the level of content and the amount of knowledge-sharing and debate that we are encouraged to participate in – in our own industry, let alone other things that may pique our interest – it is hard to add even one or two events to our diaries. But an association can help you
determine what’s justifiable and what isn’t. It’s important too to lean on your network for support, to knowledge share in order to cope. ITM hosts a number of events throughout the year, from educational focus forums to networking events in our regions

When finding my 'to do' list ever longer, my coping mechanism is usually to hanker down and get on with it, sometimes to my own detriment as spending many hours at my desk does nothing for my productivity or, for that matter, my mood. I was recently asked to attend a couple of events back to back, one a training based day and the other an exhibition. My immediate thought was ‘I can’t spare the time’, but I was encouraged to go. I came back to my desk having learnt about membership strategy and processes and having explored new creative ideas for events as well as making new contacts. They were probably two of the most productive days I've had in recent months, and enjoyable too. I felt immediately armed with a
better skill set to tackle some of the tasks on my to do list and felt
– and even a dragon boat racing and family fun day too! Our partner, GBTA Europe, also
hosts a number of events, some sector-driven such as the ITM/ GBTA Charity event in June or the GBTA Europe Oil, Gas & Marine event later in the year. Between us we offer live events,
webinars and online resources. All of it is out there for the taking, so whether it is an ITM, GBTA event or another industry event you choose to attend during these tough times, it is important that we don’t forget to take the time out and make the most of it. To find out more about the
resources available to you at ITM, or to become part of the ITM network and attend this May's conference, visit
