We’re almost halfway through 2012, with the Olympics fast approaching, and vigilance over controlling costs continues to be a priority for corporates. Indeed, a clutch of studies point to little reason to loosen the reins on spending.
An ACTE study of 200 travel managers says clamping down on the use of non-preferred suppliers, increasing adoption of SBTs and switching more meetings to the likes of videoconferencing is their focus. Findings from AirPlus’ annual International Travel Management Study of
1,700 travel managers across 20 countries highlight an expectation of fewer negotiated corporate deals, more spot buying, and concern over mobile technology in the next 12 months. Furthermore, Concur’s revelation that UK businesses shelled out
£692million in expenses last year that were out of policy is further evidence, if any were needed, that travel management still has a long way to go. Our pages this issue will go a long way to guide and inform travel managers
of the right way forward on many of these fronts. Take a look at page 7 to see how IBM has managed its meetings on a global scale, how some of your business needs can be met by electronic rather than face-to-face meetings in our Green Watch feature on page 58, and the pitfalls and challenges of incorporating mobile apps into your travel policy, on page 66. Business travel consultants can offer
66
a helping hand across all these issues, and our annual round-up of these third party industry experts can be found on page 70. How to strike better deals with airline alliances and save pennies is
the subject of our step-by-step guide on page 12, but don’t hold your breath for major discounts, while our feature on serviced apartments on page 32 shows that providers are slowly cranking up more appropriate booking systems to make this accommodation sector more travel policy friendly. Features on budget hotels’ moves to more central locations and develop- ments in business class in the air and on the ground can be found on page 74 and 82 respectively, while this magazine’s annual conference is yet another place to bone up on all the aforementioned concerns vexing buyers. See page 17 for details.
