Study links vitaminD deficiency and heart disease
A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology has shown a link between vitamin D deficiency and heart disease. Vitamin D is known as the 'sunshine vitamin' as it is generated in the body by exposure to UVB.
Researchers at the Univeristy of Kansas analysed date on more than 10, 000 patients and found that 70% were deficient in Vitamin D and their likelihood of dieing of heart disease was doubled. When the patients received vitamin D supplements, their risk was lowered by 60%.
"We expected to see that there was a relationship between heart disease and vitamin D deficiency; we were surprised at how strong it was," commented Dr. James L. Vaceck, professor of cardiology at the University of Kansas Hospital and Medical Center.
Other research has also shown that a lack of vitamin D in the body can also lead to the cause of other diseases, including cancers.
