step ahead By Donna Taylor
Calluses are not an unusual thing to suffer from, infact they’re quite common, particularly amongst ladies who wear heels, but amongst men too.
A callus is a protective thickening of the skin and is dry, toughened skin, that develops as a result of recurrent friction and pressure. It’s usually identifiable on the foot as it usually looks like hard, yellow skin.
Feet are one of those areas of the body that clients tend to hide away under socks and shoes, just concentrating on the areas that can be seen. With Summer on its way, it’s time to encourage your clients to get their feet out and sort those calluses!
Mainly toughened skin and calluses can be found on the ball of the foot, but can also be found on the heels quite often too. Calluses can also occur on the toes where friction has occurred and over time the skin has toughened and resulted in a callus, more commonly known as a corn. A callus refers to a more diffused, flattened area of thick skin, while a corn is a thick, localised area of dry skin.
In some extreme cases, calluses can also occur if the client is suffering from an illness or a disease. If you find yourself treating a client where this could be the case, make sure that you ask them to seek advice from a doctor before going ahead with any treatment.
