INDUSTRY OPINIONS | TRADE FORTUNE TELLERS

This confused looking man isn’t a member of the bike trade, but if he was he might be wondering whether this is the year of the 29er...

2012 to challenge the status quo?

It’s January and nobody can really predict with any certainty what lies ahead. The economy remains in a shaky condition, the Euro is on the brink of collapse, but is it really all doom and gloom in the industry? Mark Sutton asks the bike trade for their thoughts on the year ahead…

RETAIL

PERSPECTIVES “2012 is going to be a very exciting

year, it will be the year that separates the men from the boys. For us it'll be all about growing the business internally by growing market share. There is a lot of money out there, you just have to give the customer reasons to spend it and make it easy for them to do so. Our biggest concern for 2012 is stock availability. If we can get it, we will sell it.” STEVE BASKERVILLE, REAL CYCLES

“We seem to be doing okay so far, but speaking to reps and looking at other companies we are expecting a tough year for everyone.”

Keith Jones (right) says, as cliche as it is, the recession is better for the bike business than many trades...

“My prediction for 2012? I feel it’ll see the closure of plenty of bike shops, for starters, perhaps largely down to the discounting practice that’s been strangling our margins for so long. Further to that, I suspect it’ll bring about tighter control of a distributor and manufacturer’s margin too. Personally, though, we’re looking forward to a

great 2012, as retail is only a small part of our business. Offering hire and holiday to cyclists gives us a boost given how many holidaymakers are staying local at present.” SPOKESPERSON, DALES BIKE CENTRE

“It is the most exciting time in 20 years in the industry. The recession always seems to boost the trade. It’s a cliché, but cycling really does seem to be the new golf.”

KEITH JONES, WHEELIES DIRECTOR
