RELENTLESS VIRTUES Agency: Erasmus Production: Pulse Films Vfx: Prime Focus
This Relentless spot features layers and layers of vfx that turn the high-adrenaline action of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Roger Gracie, street dancer Zoe Green, BMX star Mark Webb and Gallows’ guitarist Steph Carter, captured over a three day green screen studio shoot, into a fast moving, visually compelling 60-second commercial. “As a group, Steve [Waugh, After Effects], Jon [Noorlander, Maya and Nuke] and I would decide who was best to work on each element and then get the bare bones of the shots together, slowly layering up the elements to the scene,” explains vfx supervisor James Maclachlan. “Then we would sit with the shot looped in the Flame and make joint notes on where improvements could be made. Only then we would present the shot to the client and agency.”

NATIONWIDE CAROUSEL Agency: 18 Feet & Rising Production: Partizan Vfx: MPC
Nationwide Carousel, directed by Partizan’s Eric Lynne for 18 Feet & Rising, mixes stop-frame animation with modern day post work and clever shooting techniques. It evolves around a carousel, which was originally going to be rotating until MPC did a pre-viz to get an idea of the carousel’s shape, size and speed of rotation, and realised the sheer scale of it meant it wasn’t going to rotate properly. Instead, a custom-built track enabled a camera to move around the carousel, which was shot against a black backdrop. A model forest was shot at a separate studio shoot and was composited into the background by MPC, which managed to retain the subtleties of lighting from the carousel shoot. MPC’s work included a general clean-up, de-rigging, and enhancing the carousel with lighting effects and flares.
