COMMERCIALS 30 BEST IN SHOW
As well as telling us about their businesses, producers vote for their favourite directors, ads, agencies, post houses, editors and vfx ops
TOP DIRECTORS 1. RINGAN LEDWIDGE, RATTLING STICK 2. DOUGALWILSON, BLINK 3. DANIEL KLEINMAN, RATTLING STICK 4. CHRIS PALMER, GORGEOUS
TOP ADS It’s a first for the poll of commercials producers’ most admired ads but the same spot has taken the number one position for the second year in a row. That may reflect a dearth of outstanding new commercials in recent months but it also reflects the sheer brilliance and excitement of Independent director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s stunning superstar stacked Write the Future for Nike. More of last year’s favourites have also made the top 10 again – Dougal Wilson’s Always a Woman John Lewis ad is still tugging at our voters’ heartstrings as is Vince Squibb’s Hovis spot, Miss Chief and Si & Ad’s Piano for
Match.com. In second position is Sonny London’s Fredrik Bond’s depiction of the coolest party entrance of all time as the most popular man in the world charms his way towards a cool refreshing Heineken. Also in second place is the US produced The Force spot for VW and the hilarious Fuel For Big Days Weetabix commercial helmed by Guy Shelmerdine out of Smuggler’s UK office. In equal fifth is Andy McLeod’s incredibly strange, but strangely funny spot for Wall’s in which a pocket sized bulldog does the talking for emotionally retarded ‘blokes’ and in equal ninth is Aardman directors Sumo Science and their amazing Dot spot for Nokia that also gave them a Guinness World record for the smallest stop-frame ad ever.

TOP DIRECTORS It’s another year at the top for Ringan Ledwidge. The Rattling Stick director has now topped the commercials production companies’ favourite directors poll for three years in a row. It makes six years at the top for Rattling Stick directors (as Danny Kleinman took the top position for the three years before Ledwidge). Ledwidge’s voters pick him out for being a “front runner and ever evolving,” for his “fantastic eye” and for being “a very cool guy” and always making “great choices.” In second place again is Blink’s Dougal Wilson, “whatever he touches turns to gold” says one of his admirers. The “consistently brilliant” Danny Kleinman stays at third position in the poll and has now spent longer in the 10 than any other commercials director. Gorgeous’s Chris Palmer (“good all rounder, consistent and a lovely fella”) moves up slightly to fourth position after being voted equal fifth last time. Palmer switches places with Sonny’s Fredrik Bond who is voted equal fifth this year after coming fourth in last year’s poll. Rogue’s Sam Brown moves up slightly, from seventh in last year’s list to equal fifth alongside Stink’s Ivan Zacharias who’s lauded for his “distinctive, iconic work” and because “In the words of Carly Simon, ‘nobody does it better.’”
