EXECUTIVE REPORT

As the smallest new model, the 500kg payload DT05 works well with the 803 micro excavator.

Tracked dumper quintet

During the official opening of its group headquarters, Wacker Neuson revealed a new range of compact tracked dumpers. Nick Johnson reports from Munich.

Having recently joined Wacker Neuson as Chief Executive Officer, Cem Peksaglam claims that the company is emerging stronger from the economic downturn. He says the manufacturer has reduced its costs and introduced more efficient processes, whilst continuing to modernise its facilities and products. Part of this updating is the new group headquarters building in Munich, resulting from an investment of €43m. The energy efficient complex houses both the international company’s head office functions and its new European research and development centre.

Bolstered by the need to increase production capacity following its deal to produce compact excavators for Caterpillar, Wacker Neuson is also investing €65m in a new factory at Horsching, near Linz in Austria. Designed to offer the capability to triple production volumes of the company’s compact construction equipment in that country, the facility is scheduled for completion in May next year.

New high-tip options

Amongst the products that Wacker Neuson has been building at its existing Linz factory have been three compact tracked dumpers. Now, however, the walk- behind 900kg payload TD9, the driver seated 1500kg TD15 and the 1700kg TD18 models are being superseded by a new range comprising five new machines. Benefiting from collaboration with Messersi in Italy, the enlarged range has allowed payloads to extend down to 500kg and up to 2500kg whilst, most importantly for the UK market, adding new high-tip skip options.

The smallest DT5 model is a walk-behind machine, incorporating a hinge-down stand-on rear platform, and is only 660mm wide. It can be supplied with either a 6.5hp Honda petrol engine or a 6.6hp Yanmar diesel power unit. There is also a choice of front tipping dumper skips, comprising either a 500kg payload ground level discharge skip or a high-tip version offering a 1397mm discharge height and a payload capacity of 350kg.

The 790mm wide walk-behind DT08, which has a maximum payload rating of 800kg, is available in standard or ‘Proline’ versions. The former can be powered by either a 9hp Honda petrol engine or a 10hp Yanmar diesel unit. The forward discharge dumper skip options

available are an 800kg payload standard tip, with or without a self-loading scoop, or a 450kg payload high-tip (1426mm) skip.

Incorporating a more powerful 13hp Kubota diesel engine and variable displacement hydraulic pumps, the DT08 Proline version offers greater performance. It can utilise a 800kg payload front tipping dumper skip, with the option of a self-loading scoop, an 800kg payload front-tip platform body, a 450kg payload high-tip dumper skip or a concrete mixer drum, with or without scoop.

Completing the walk-behind line-up is the 790mm wide DT9, which sports a 13.8hp Kubota diesel engine. Dumper options include a 1200kg payload standard tip skip and a 750kg payload high-tip skip, both of which can be supplied with a self-loading scoop.

Italian influence

The DT25 features a front mounted 180˚ swivel seat with joystick controls that operate logically when facing front or rear.

The Messersi connection appears particularly evident when viewing the largest, driver seated DT15 and DT25 tracked dumpers. The 1500kg maximum payload DT15 has a forward facing, rear mounted seat and a 20.3hp Kubota diesel engine. Body options include a 1500kg payload standard discharge front-tip dumper skip, a 1000kg payload high-tip skip, both available with or without a scoop, a 1500kg payload swivel skip or a scoop-fed concrete mixer.

Powered by a 48hp Kubota diesel engine, the 2500kg payload DT25 model offers the choice of a rear-tip platform body or a swivel skip. Like the Messersi TCH-2500, this Wacker Neuson machine has a front mounted seat that can be turned through 180° so that the operator can face the rear for safer reversing and tipping. A really good feature is the automatic changeover switch, which ensures that the travel joystick operates logically irrespective of whether the seat is facing forwards or backwards.

Jonathan Vaines, MD of Wacker Neuson Ltd, says that the new tracked dumpers will become available here early next year, and that the company is set to use the Executive Hire Show in February for their official UK launch.
