EXECUTIVE HIRE NEWS IN THE 2000s continued

Indeed, EHN’s coverage adapted to keep readers informed of products targeted at new and existing markets. Our Market Reports and hands-on articles have covered equipment as diverse as low vibration power tools, flood damage restoration products, remote control mowers and tracked carriers for hazardous environments, low level access solutions like podium steps and compact scissor lifts, site survey and safety equipment, cordless tools driven by ever more powerful battery technology, zero tail swing mini excavators and solar powered traffic lights, again showing how far our industry has evolved from the ‘traditional’ tool hire model.

Health & Safety developments

During the decade we discussed issues concerning all hirers, illustrating not only the wide ranging nature of the industry’s activities and interests, but also EHN’s strengthening ‘Voice’.We have analysed topics such as the CITB Levy, regulations concerning the supply of ‘red diesel’, plant theft, trailers and towing laws, and recycling initiatives, amongst many others.

We have also monitored developments in key areas of Health & Safety creating customer demand for appropriate products and advice, in areas such as workplace noise and dust, and our assessment of newly introduced legislation on Work at Height and Hand Arm Vibration led to the publication of dedicated supplements in December 2004 and May 2005 respectively, as well as the staging of two successful HAV conferences in 2005 and 2006, again reflecting our industry’s passion for knowledge and EHN’s determination to provide them with it.

Initiatives like EHN’s May 2005 HAV Supplement helped to set the industry’s agenda.

Throughout the decade, hire became much more widely regarded as an industry in its own right. Articles in EHN followed the development of hire-specific NVQs and training initiatives for new entrants, while the

growing awareness among bodies like the Health & Safety Executive that they need to gain the views of hirers when drafting new regulations shows our industry as an essential link in the supply chain between manufacturers and end users.

Embracing the digital age, EHN went on-line in 2008.

As the articles covering the earlier decades have shown, EHN has constantly strived to ensure that the industry’s exhibition has reflected its evolving needs. In 2001 we stated, “any successful industry exhibition has to be a three way partnership between the organisers, exhibitors and, most importantly, visitors.” The industry watched as Hirex became a mere ‘zone’ within SED (now defunct, of course) in 2003, then a ‘show within a show’ at Interbuild in 2004, and saw the creation, albeit briefly, of the London-based Premier Hire and Hire Show events. Recognising the industry’s need for a centrally located, dedicated hire exhibition representing all stakeholders, EHN launched the Executive Hire Show at the Ricoh Arena, first held in 2007. This would not have been possible without EHN’s central position within the industry, and its reach towards passionate exhibitors and visitors, based on the platform of the magazine.

The passion for hire remains

And that passion continues to drive the industry and its magazine. In September 2005, Crosshire championed hirers as having become an essential service industry, not merely distributors of new, freshly packed goods like supermarkets, and staffed by fully trained drivers, fitters and workshop technicians. The economic turbulence in the last years of the decade may have provided difficulties and challenges, but EHN has continued to emphasise the positive thinking and sheer hard work that has enabled hirers and suppliers to progress towards the next ten years, and beyond.

Defining an industry is important, but what matters more is the practical matter of getting the job done well and delighting customers through excellent service. As our Forum stated as the current decade began, challenges bring opportunities, and the outcome is success, if approached in the right way. EHN’s published issues are filled with the stories of hirers who prove this. The magazine will continue to adapt, evolve and serve this enthralling industry, preserving the vision shown by the original founders 40 years ago.
