ANNIVERSARY ISSUE 1971-2011

BUSINESS FOCUSES ON WHAT IT’S GOOD AT.

Business has never been tougher, but in its 40th year Brandon Hire has delivered a strong performance. Managing Director Tim Smith shares his thoughts on how the Bristol-based tool hire company has managed to achieve positive results.

Against a backdrop of a weak economy and continued media reports of uncertainty, Brandon Hire has stayed focused on what it’s good at – hiring tools and equipment.

The business has also recognised the importance of delivering service at a local level. With branches across the country, it’s very much a national company. But Tim says the key to their success is having great local staff, who know customers and have the flexibility at branch level to make decisions and respond quickly.

“There’s no doubt that many independent tool hire businesses have close relationships with their customers but just because we’re a national name doesn’t mean we don’t do this too.”

This sense of localness has been developed even further since Brandon Hire became a private company last year, following Wolseley’s decision to sell the business.

“Being part of Wolseley had many advantages but the fact that the senior management team have put their own money into the company has given it a stability and clear, long-term vision. We recognise the importance of our Bristol roots and the need to allow branches to have their own personalities, local relationships and regional variations.”

Tim also believes that Brandon Hire has always been a business with real passion – for many of its long standing employees it matters that it’s about tool hire and they care about the role they play in helping their customers to get the job done. Although Tim joined as MD as recently as 2007, he admits he can’t imagine heading up any other organisation “This is a great industry to be part of and one which tries hard to give good service. But there’s no doubt that we all need to look at how we can do even better and how we can continue to drive sales and at the same time deliver real value and support our customers during these difficult times.” Executive Hire News’ publisher Robert Aplin acknowledges that Tim’s passion for the industry is what makes him stand out. “When Tim first came into tool hire his enthusiasm was obvious for all to see and there’s no doubt that his attitude makes a difference.”
