A great time for Kango
In the early 1980s both Kango and Wolf were sold as separate brands under the Kango Wolf Power Tools banner. In 1988 Wolf merged into Kango after 88 years of
trading. The new Kango brand and corporate logo were re-launched from its new base in Peterborough with the campaign ‘when the going gets tough the tough get Kango’. Kango raised
its share of the demolition hammer market substantially in the late 1980s, focusing on after-care and reliability as the primary buying criteria for the demanding hire industry in the UK. Of course, there
were some great personalities at Kango including Mike Harrison, Richard Levett, Graeme Auchterlonie, Gerry McGettigan, John Norry, Bob Cheek, Martin Deadman, Gary Wingrove and Gordon McVean.
Hirex, Cologne and the American Rental Show were the key dates for product launches and meeting up with old friends and hire clients. I remember touring local HAE meetings in the late 1980s and being given a hard time as we
got the Kango act together and faced our biggest critics who just wanted us to get it right. I also remember some of the original families who were the key players at the inception of the UK hire industry and there were some really astute businessmen who were the independent leaders of the industry. Of course time
moves on, and Kango as a unique brand is no
more. The 1980s were a great time for Kango in the UK and Ireland and, looking back, they were great times for hire companies too.
