Walking around the Rockhill Furnace shops, it is apparent that the effects of time are slowly being reversed... Thanks to the Friends of the East Broad Top and other volunteers, a lot of change is going on in a small town where not much has changed in a century.

The remainder of the weekend found

BELOW: No. 15 prepares to head south from Colgate Grove with a mixed freight consist during the East Broad Top Fall Spectacular.

No. 15 powering the railroad’s typical passenger consist of several open and semi-open cars, joined on the line by doodlebug M-1 and a variety of indus- trial narrow gauge diesels the EBT has accumulated. Across the parking lot, the Rockhill Trolley Museum was pro- viding rides, including newly acquired Public Service of New Jersey PCC No. 6 which has been recently been placed into service.

Close your eyes and you’ll feel the sensations of a working steam railroad from 70 years ago. The sounds and smells are unmistakable. Poke your head into the shop, and see machines working as they were intended when they were first installed. Is it a dream? Walking around the Rockhill Fur-

nace shops, it’s apparent that the ef- fects of time are slowly being reversed. Thanks to the Friends of the East Broad Top and other volunteers, the shop building has new glass in the win- dows and two water columns have been returned to service. The coal tipple, long unused, has a new chute; it won’t be long before the yellow front end loader used to fill the locomotives’ ten- ders will be out of work. Mikado No. 12, the smallest of the six, has a fresh coat of paint. And the belt-driven shop is gradually getting its pulleys and shafts spinning again. A lot of change is going on in a small town where not much has changed in a century.
