Amtrak DALE WOODLAND Rare GE’s Work Pennsylvania Branches on New Railroad


THE PENNSYLVANIA NORTHEASTERN RAILROAD (PNR) took over from CSX on August 13, 2011, the “Lansdale Cluster” freight operations, which serve customers located on SEPTA trackage radiating from that Pennsylvania town. The power is based in Lansdale and includes former Norfolk Southern (ex-Conrail) C39-8s 8202, 8211, and 8212, ex-Canadian Pacific SD40-2 No. 5577, and ex- Canadian National SD40-2W’s 5315 and 5342; they’re all patch jobs. CSX delivers cars to Lansdale for PNR,the affiliated New Hope & Ivyland (NHRR), and the East Penn; PNR moves the cars to and from the NHRR connection at Warminster and also to the East Penn interchange at Telford. The only other C39-8s still operating are a batch of ex-NS units on the rugged Ferrocarril Central Andino in Peru.

ALBANY-AREA DOUBLE TRACK: The long-awaited project to add a second track to Amtrak's 17-mile route between Albany/Rens- selaer and Schenectady, N.Y., will finally be- come a reality. On September 26, 2011, track owner CSX Transportation, Amtrak, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the Federal Railroad Administration reached an agreement that will permit work to begin on the $91.2 million project. The work will include double tracking the entire route, rebuilding an existing siding and four interlockings, in- stalling two new interlockings, the repair and rehabilitation of 16 bridges, and the installa- tion of four-quadrant grade crossing protection at three locations. Another $58.1 million will go to improvements at the Schenectady and Al- bany/Rensselaer stations.
