Cotton Belt Engineer, written and published by Edwin C. Cooper, is a biography of C.W. Standifer, a St. Louis-Southwestern engineer from 1917 through 1967 who retired as the No. 1 engineer on the Southern Division. Standifer ran everything from 4-4-0s to 4-8-4s and FT’s through GP40s, and lived through a half cen- tury of change. the Ashe County Historical Society is a re- cent addition to the Arcadia Publishing Images of Rail series. The book covers the North Carolina end of the Norfolk & Western branch which started at the main line con- nection at Abingdon, Va., and was made fa- mous by O. Winston Link’s photography (the book has no Link photos). The book covers the history of the line from its inception before World War I as the Virginia Carolina Rail- road through its abandonment in 1977. It’s packed with nicely printed, well-captioned b&w photos which show not only the railroad and its equipment but also its environs, in- cluding the towns and industries it served.
