active comfort. The fabric also has wicking properties,” Alan continues. “A lot of the garments have mesh underarm panels to aid movement and help you feel cooler. All of the seams are flatlock which helps prevent chaffing and irritation. There are reflective details for improved visibility in low light conditions and features such as laser cut details. Itʼs a little design feature that makes our product stand out. We have T shirts and a zip top for running and cycling in that fabric. The zip is hinged so that it doesnʼt flip up and down while youʼre running. “The fabric used in the jacket is extremely lightweight. Itʼs polyester woven with a Teflon coating, so that the rain will just run off.
“All the tops have heat sealed labels, which, again, adds to the comfort. “The Endurance range also includes running shorts for men and ladies which have little details like a zipped key pocket in the back and mesh inner lining. Every single one of our garments has the main decoration area left blank and although our garments are branded, the branding is in a secondary position.” According to Alan, base layers have become massively popular in the last five years – particularly with younger sports enthusiasts. “Itʼs become like a staple uniform for youngsters participating in sports,” says Alan. “I think itʼs because we see a lot of professional footballers wearing it.”
The Spalding styles are made in a stretchy warp knit fabric which has inherent compression properties. “Itʼs also cationic polyester, so you donʼt get colour migration. Itʼs specifically designed for printing,” adds Alan.
For Base Layers there is dual sizing – XS/S, M/L and XL/2XL and because the fabric has 20% stretch, they fit even the burliest of rugby players!

Continues Alan: “One point of difference is that unlike a lot of competitors, we are offering black, white, blue and red in the long sleeve tee. The long sleeve seems to be the most popular option because you can wear it under team tops and Endurance tops. All of our range mixes and matches “Finally, we have the Spalding One
Team range in five colours – black, white, yellow, red, royal and navy, in every single style. The fabric is a lightweight polyester with a wicking finish.”
According to Alan, One Team is a big opportunity for decorators to sell into schools and local sports teams. “Base layers are a premium product but One Team is more about kitting out the whole team.
“All of the products have been tested for transfer printing, screen printing and embroidery and there will be guidelines for decorators on the Spalding website.” Initial response to the new brand has been extremely positive. Says Jonny Thomson: “Itʼs incredibly good value. We are offering a brand that has the stability of an imprint brand but the range offering is such that you could quite easily put it next to retail brands.”
All Spalding garments are Oeko-Tex and WRAP certified. A huge amount of research has gone into developing the brand for printwear. “The decoration potential was always in our minds,” says Alan, “but the starting point was really about designing garments that work. “This is a great opportunity to have a brand new range of sports apparel for Europe. Itʼs not to watch sport in. Itʼs to do sport in!”
