THE STORY OF TAUCK’S “YELLOW ROADS OF EUROPE”


It all started with Arthur Tauck, Jr.’s fond memories of exploring Europe’s country roads by bicycle while in the service, sitting down for a chat and a story or two with the locals in villages right out of Grimm’s fairy tales and enjoying those special unexpected moments that make all the difference... a personal introduction to Paddy Fenton of Molanna’s dairy farm in Ireland... an all-night discussion about skiing – and, subsequently, business – with the owner of a little Swiss inn at the foot of the Jungfrau... an impromptu trek along the narrow pathways of Cinque Terre in time to greet fishing boats returning with the day’s catch, and an outstanding, fresh fish dinner...


So in 1990, our trio of European travel experts including Arthur Tauck, Jr. headed off to Europe to turn this vision of intimate European travel into reality, and found it along secondary roads marked in yellow on Europe’s Michelin maps... scenic byways weaving in and out of colorful villages, over pristine rivers and through mountain passes. And they sought out unique experiences – moments that would provide our guests with a truly memorable European experience... one they would want to share with their friends back home.


The art of traveling well is the experience of the moment. Like listening to an impromptu musical performance “somewhere in Europe” (because we love surprises)... admiring the view among the “five lands” of Cinque Terre... strolling among the blooms and fountains of Salzburg’s Mirabell Gardens... learning culinary secrets from a French chef... watching a gifted artisan at work in Ireland... or enjoying a toast along the idyllic Mediterranean coast. That’s what traveling with Tauck in Europe is all about... something different, every day.
