Regal castles & historic homes Turrets and ramparts, armor and oak paneling, Waterford chandeliers and gilt mirrors reflect the royal architectural décor you’ll find at Ashford Castle. Its first stones were laid in 1228, and since that time eight privileged Irish families have called this 83-bedroom castle home. The Earl of Carrick built his mansion near Waterford in Thomastown on the bank of the River Nore. He called it Mount Juliet in honor of his wife, and he and his family lived there until 1914, when the estate was purchased by the McCalmont family who lived there until quite recently. The Culloden Estate & Spa near Belfast, set in 12 acres of secluded gardens, was originally built as an official palace for the Bishops of Down. The Old Ground Hotel in Ennis, near the Cliffs of Moher, was built in the 18th century as a private mansion and served as home for a handful of leading families before becoming a hotel in 1895. As a Tauck guest, you’ll stay inside each of these regal properties as you experience an insider’s glimpse of the best of Ireland from coast to coast, in country villages and storied cities, and along the scenic byways of Northern Ireland.
