You’ll see why on a city tour of France’s culinary capital including a tasting lunch at the famed Les Halles de Lyon indoor food market – where the best lyonnaise chefs reportedly shop – offering a host of fresh foods including breads, cheeses, meats, produce, spices, desserts... the list goes on; enjoy tastings of various goodies paired with appropriate wines! Also visit Vieux Lyon, one of the largest Renaissance quarters in Europe, and 19th-century Notre-Dame de Fourvière, with its fine mosaics and stained glass. Later, travel to the Beaujolais region for a wine tasting – magnifique! Continue cruising to Vienne. Meals BLD
5. THE ROMANS CALLED IT “VIENNA,” BUT... The long history of Vienne on the Rhône goes back even further than the Romans... who called it “Vienna,” like today’s Austrian capital, and left a treasure trove of ruins to check out on a walking tour – including roads, ramparts, aqueducts, a theatre and the 1st-century Temple of Augustus and Livia, built during the reign of the Emperor Claudius. There are also castle ruins, two Romanesque churches and a Gothic cathedral to see. Cruise on to Avignon. Meals BLD
6. APALACE FIT FOR A POPE IN PROVENCE For centuries, schoolchildren have sung a song about dancing on the bridge of Avignon, the walled medieval city that replaced Rome as headquarters for several popes in the 1300s. A walking tour explores the city and the fortress-like Palais des Papes built by those pontiffs... who also enjoyed the fruit of the vine and cultivated the local wine industry (Châteauneuf-du-Pape). Tonight, another famous bridge in Provence takes center stage – the Pont du Gard, an astonishing Roman aqueduct 160 feet high with three sets of arches spanning the River Gardon that once carried millions of gallons of water a day to the city of Nîmes. Join us this evening for a festive Provençal-style dinner featuring regional wines, cuisine and entertainment set against the backdrop of this ancient engineering marvel. Meals BLD
