4. ARLES & OLIVE OIL AT MAS DES BARRES Vincent van Gogh was inspired by the landscapes you’ll see en route to medieval Arles. A walking tour of Old Town takes in the Roman ruins and includes sights that the artist painted. After lunch on your own, continue to the Pont du Gard for an adventurous walk atop the 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct spanning the River Gardon. Dinner tonight is a special treat when we take you to the Moulin du Mas des Barres olive orchards for an insider’s look at the oil production process, complete with a tasting and Provençal folklore. 5. MEDIEVAL AVIGNON & TGV TRAIN TO PARIS Avignon has reigned as one of the most beautiful medieval cities since the 14th century when it was the capital of Christendom and the home of the popes. A visit inside Palais des Papes with a local guide reveals the treasures and lifestyles of the pontiffs who reigned in Avignon for almost 70 years.
