nother day, another battle for Neil Herron as he fights the injustices of parking enforcement. Whether taking on local authorities or rogue clampers, he constantly has a plateful.


As Parking News rings for an interview, Herron has just learned that a driver has been clamped near Tilbury, and a £1,200 release fee demanded of him (see news story on page 8). His sense of outrage is palpable. But Herron’s work is about more than reacting to industry rogues. Intelligent use of new technology

could, he believes, help end the ritual of commercial vehicles routinely getting a parking ticket when loading or dropping-off in restricted kerbside areas. To this end, Herron has created Activ8, a


company that’s developing an experimental on-line system of reserving parking slots in busy urban areas – ‘virtual loading bays’. ‘Often drivers can get told to park 200 metres


away and that’s no use when you’re dropping off heavily-laden pallets,’ says Herron.


Fenced off spaces Te system enables pre-booked space to be earmarked for a particular time and location – ‘the equivalent of an air traffic control system for road traffic kerbside drops,’ he says. Activ8’s geo-fence technology will warn of


a vehicle’s imminent arrival, and GPS (global positioning system) helps direct it to the reserved slot. Herron claims that Activ8VPS (virtual parking solutions) will, besides putting a stop to parking
