in People Gold standard, something Cooper is very proud of. ‘We faced a big challenge – a high turnover of staff, low motivation, higher than average sick leave, recruitment issues, high customer complaints and public perception,’ he said. ‘Add to this the challenges of being a lone worker,
the fact that many of our staff join us through TUPE, when we pick up local authority contracts, and in many cases English is not the first language of a significant number of our staff. ‘Somehow we had to get everyone to understand, and buy into, NSL’s values, which are teamwork, ethics, respect, valuing diversity, integrity and seeking continuous improvement. ‘We achieved this through clear leadership,
engaging managers, giving colleagues a voice, allowing employees to develop at all levels and increasing colleague engagement.’ A company newspaper highlights stories of
individual achievements, there are voucher schemes rewarding performances and staff social events. For formal training opportunities, the NSL
Academy offers a range of qualifications. Te results, said Cooper, are a reduction in sickness
absences, a 25 per cent increase in staff retention and colleague engagement is at 69 per cent.
