NEWS LOCAL AUTHORITY NEWS A canny new contract
Apcoa has been awarded the Tyne and Wear Metro car park management contract. T e Tyne and Wear Metro is
a light rail system in north east England serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland. It opened in 1980 and has a network covering nearly 48 miles.
T ere are 18 car parks,
adjacent to the stations, which are for the specifi c use of Metro customers. An Apcoa spokesperson
said the company would provide ‘a fl exible and effi cient solution for managing the car park portfolio with a focus on delivering a high level of security and customer service.’
NEW CONTRACT FOR SOLIHULL
A new parking operator will be managing street parking in Solihull after NSL picked up a fi ve-year contract, understood to be worth an estimated £7m. In addition to on-street
parking enforcement, NSL will take over the management of 28 local authority car parks. Commercial director Graham Williams said: ‘T e Solihull contract is a
framework agreement, which means that any member authorities of the West Midlands Centre of Excellence Regional Procurement Hub can use the contract to procure on- and off -street parking management services through NSL’s contract with Solihull Metropolitan Council without the need to carry out their own tender exercise.’
EMPLOYERS URGED TO MEET DEADLINE
All employers inside Nottingham City Council’s administrative boundary that provide workplace parking places, must now have applied for a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) licence. Charging will start on 1 April 2012.
Under the rules of the WPL, employers with 11 or more workplace parking places will need to pay when charging starts next year.
Employers with 10 or fewer workplace parking places will be entitled to a 100 per cent discount and will not have to pay anything, although they will still need to get a licence. Councillor Jane Urquhart,
portfolio holder for planning and transport said: ‘This is an important milestone for the scheme and it is important that all businesses across the city’s boundary understand that they need to hold a WPL licence if they provide any workplace parking places, despite charging not starting until April next year.’ All money raised from the WPL must be invested into improving local transport for Nottingham, including environmentally-friendly forms of transport, the addition of two further tram lines and the redevelopment of Nottingham Station.
Employers who fail to purchase a WPL licence will be subject to penalty charge notices, which could result in County Court judgements. Deliberately misleading the authorities on the number of parking places may be subject to criminal proceedings.
