Mental illness services

Our mental illness services provide treatment and care in gender specific services for men and women with a primary diagnosis of mental illness. We provide person-centred care, respectful of patients’ spiritual, religious and cultural needs, and sexuality. These services recognise that there may frequently be underlying personality traits but not to such a significant degree as to require admission into a Co-Morbid MI+PD service or one of our dedicated PD services.

Care and treatment are underpinned by holistic, integrated recovery. We encourage collaboration between patients, carers families and external agencies.

Treatment programmes

Treatment is within a therapeutic milieu which aims to provide a low expressed emotion environment that supports the processes of stabilisation and recovery. All our staff are committed to maintaining consistency, modelling appropriate problem-solving skills and dealing with distress in a systematic and empathetic manner.

Where there is a need for pharmacological intervention the team involves each patient in decisions about medication, with a view to achieving concordance. Medication is continuously reviewed, kept to a minimum and used for the shortest time possible. All prescribing is informed by NICE and other outcome and research guidelines.

Multi-disciplinary teams undertake a range of assessments including:

• Cognitive testing including memory • Functional assessments including measurement of occupational performance

• Mental illness symptoms e.g. psychosis, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation

• Risk assessment including violence (HCR-20), sexual violence, substance use

• Physical health
