Diggle Ranges F Class 5th Round
SEPTEMBER 2011
Shooting in the rain is not only unpleasant but it can also raise pressures if water gets in the rifle’s chamber. Some managed to make the most of it but some couldn’t, with one shooter finding it so difficult to see through his scope that he decided to abandon that stage. The two that managed to ignore the weather and make the best of it were Altcar’s 101 Club shooters Steve Donaldson, who finished in top spot on 90.4v and Adam Bagnall, who finished second with 89.4v.
After a brief but welcome lunch break to try and dry out equipment, it was the turn of the Open Class shooters, with the F/TR guys doing butt duty – at least it’s dry in butts!
At the end of the first 800 yard Open stage Mark Daish headed the field on 98.5v followed closely by Tony Marsh on 97.7v. Conditions at 800 yards were similar to the morning details but back at 1000 yards the wind had picked up and the rain really started to come down. Anthony Dunne (a regular League shooter who travels every time from the Republic of Ireland) finished top with 89.4v and Grant Taylor close behind on 86.4v. Contrast these scores with the F/TR guys to get an indication of conditions!
The traditional visit to the local Indian restaurant followed on Saturday evening then back on range for 8.00am Sunday for another wetting. But no – for the Open shooters on the first detail it was extraordinarily calm with no visible sign of wind to disturb the flags! Rarely is Diggle so benign, we knew it couldn’t last but the first detail took advantage and four shooters actually managed to ‘clean’ it with a perfect 75. Of those four shooters, Grant Taylor and Tony Marsh both shot 75.9v with Grant taking it on count back.
