the re-coil - as the heavy slide is driven backwards on its way to cocking the hammer, stripping the next round off the top of the magazine and then slamming it into the chamber – all in a milli-second – ready for you to take the next shot. And, no matter how quick you are with that trigger, you won’t beat the action- cycle.

As with any fullbore firearm, controlling the recoil is another matter and this is where the skill comes in. Remember the ‘double-tap’ snake eyes – when you got those two shots timed exactly right and they impacted - almost instantaneously - less than an inch apart? Yes, you could fit a compensator (as we called them) to tame the recoil, but really that was just for the serious PP guys, we loved the recoil from that 45 ACP round with its massive bullet, for it was the very thing that made the 1911 so rewarding to shoot and master.

Rimfire Pistol Semi-auto

The GSG strips more or less like the real thing – but you need that little hex. key

Wow – try a double tap – fantastic – try another and another – no snake-eyes yet but we’ll get there! I was using CCI Min Mag ammunition – as this is what I use in my 22 GSG H&K MP5 - and I put a whole box of 100 through the 1911 without a malfunction. Oh it felt good to be shooting a 1911 again!

So silly are the rules surrounding long-barrel pistols, that you can’t let anyone else have a go with it! How silly is that?

This shot gives a good view of the sights, which were great for the 25 yd ranges that this pistol will be used

on. Also, note the ambidextrous safety catch – operated here on the right side with my thumb

Amazingly, the longer barrel just wasn’t an issue – when you’re on-aim you aren’t aware of it. Neither was the bit of metal sticking out the back really. Just tuck it up your sleeve if you don’t like it! Weight- wise, the GSG is very close to the real 1911, which weighed about two and a half pounds. The GSG is within a couple of ounces even with the ‘silencer’ and ‘extension’. Sights are basic but adequate and can be
