The match ran very smoothly, with no holdups or delays and we even had time for a much need pizza at lunchtime to re-fuel us for the afternoon’s shooting. As with the LBR/LBP matches run at Leicester, we saw a very clever and efficient use of space. Even though Leicester Shooting centre only has one range, ten competitors were able to shoot through all eleven stages with

tested the full capacity of the rifles, leaving no spare rounds and punishing any mistakes or misses with a now essential reload. With 16 targets spread across the range to be engaged with two shots on each, through a number of apertures, this stage really got the adrenaline pumping and the heart rate up.

We saw a plentiful variety of challenges throughout the remaining seven stages. We had a good mix of long, short and medium stages, testing all different shooting disciplines, shooting at different distances, running up and down the range, limited magazine capacities and more speed re-loads (fuelling the debate - do you insert the fresh magazine on an open or closed bolt for maximum speed and showing which of the competitors had really been practising!). A good mix of speed and accuracy was called for, as despite the size of the IPSC targets, when they are at distance and half covered by ‘no-shoot’ targets, it is easy to miss and pickup costly penalties!

Towards the end of the match, we had stage 10, which was a simple looking 12 round medium course, to be shot through 2 apertures. However it’s never as easy as it looks, especially when the targets through the second aperture had to be shot from the weak shoulder! This really was a demanding test of coordination and dexterity considering the lever release operation of the rifles! However everyone came through it OK and some fast times were recorded.

Throughout the day, thousands of rounds of 9mm were shot downrange, scattering brass far and wide across the range and ensuring the rifles will need a thorough clean after! But, despite this heavy use, all rifles behaved remarkably well. As to be expected, most people suffered the occasional failure to eject but, on the whole, all the rifles proved very reliable.

time to spare! This shows that a large match can be built in such a confined space and other match directors can learn a lot from Ian Chamberlain.

When it came to the results, we saw five different stage winners but congratulations go to Peter Starley who won the match by the closest of margins - less than 1% over second place Dan Boswell. Special mention also goes to Darren Ashcroft, who came a very respectable 6th in his first practical match. We all owe a big ‘thanks’ to Ian Chamberlin for organising and running an enjoyable and testing match. A great day was had by all and hopefully the match can be the first of many!
