Rimfire World Championships WIND FLAGS

By CARL BOSWELL

just too big take anywhere. The Besche windicator is a thoughtful way of creating a compact design and a superb addition to the Keeney flags. They are made from sheet aluminium and mounted to the stands with a simple bolt fixing. The main paddle is made from ‘corruflute’ on a plastic arm. Another great thing about these indicators is they can be adjusted for light or heavy winds – by altering the position of the counter-balance weight.

Joe makes these indicators as a small ‘cottage industry’ project so does not have a website at the moment. If you are contacting Dan Killough however he will be able to put you in touch with Joe at the same time.

I obviously used the ones I had purchased in the USA at the World Championship. Like all tools they must be used correctly if they are to add to the end result. I’m happy with them but I need to have a play to calibrate the 180 indicator a little more precisely. Many of the UK Team regulars have adopted these flags, which suggests that they tend to do the job. The

breath of wind - exactly what you need - showing the slightest movement in calm conditions and an indication of the wind speed in very windy conditions. A very simple but effective design that just works, so much so that I actually bought a set!

There’s more - as an added bonus to the Keeney flags that are bought with stands – the Besche miniature wind indicators can be added as the hole for these is already drilled. Joe Besche has made a marvelous 180 degree indicator. This is a great piece of equipment, it’s small and compact (for traveling) and they are visible out to about 35 metres and indicate wind speed from left to right. Brilliant!

I made one of these ‘windicators’ a few years ago. It’s much bigger however and can be seen out to about 50 metres but always stays on my home range as it is

Besche 180 indicator and the set of four Keeney flags are a great investment for any serious shooter and are well worth the price.

Lastly, there is a video presentation on You Tube about the Keeney Flags by Target Shooter contributor Pedro Mateus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLBjZidJ On0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I can testify to the effectiveness of the large Keeney flags as we also relied on a set of these at the World (Centrefire) Benchrest Championships. They are really good value, especially when purchased with the adjustable stands and they are very light and compact for travelling – Vince.
