papers are very popular at present, ensure that the printer has plenty of experience of plate imaging for this stock with a 29L, or the newer 47L plate imaging curve—or better still its own curve as one size definitely does not fit all for this paper surface. Proofing for this standard is not as simple as you would hope as the consumables are very expensive, £10 per A4 page, and the software to drive the proofing device is a capital investment of £30,000, getting it wrong though is even more costly.

Choose an experienced repro house. When changing between processes to achieve the best PDF data to proof to print-match, the secret is choosing a repro house experienced in the process that you are using. You should also provide test PDFs and proofs to the printer well before the main bulk of the repro starts so that the printer can confirm it is happy that it can match on-press to the proofs supplied. This applies even more so when moving from heat-set web offset to Roto gravure. Gravure cylinder production is expensive so if you are considering long-run production of inserts into various publications, requiring source code changes, it is worth tracking down gravure printers equipped with either high-speed inkjet equipment or flying imprinters that can quickly and cheaply change source codes rather than the expensive and time-consuming process of changing cylinders.

Planning well ahead is extremely important not only to achieve the best price but also to secure your ideal schedule. This is particularly important with gravure, as there are only two UK suppliers who are both very busy thanks to the weak pound making European printers relatively expensive, exacerbated by their higher transport costs. This was made worse earlier this year with German-based Schlott Gruppe going into

If using uncoated paper, make sure your printer can handle it well. As uncoated

the equivalent of German administration and Circle France meeting the same fate, reducing European gravure conversion capacity by hundreds of thousands of tonnes per annum. Finding available gravure capacity anywhere in Europe for the rest of this year will be challenging and some catalogues may find that large-format web offset will be their only production solution.

varnish and laminates. They will make your catalogue difficult to recycle, prevent you from enjoying the best postage rates and often add time to the production schedule. Give your creative people a challenge to come up with striking graphic designs to get your catalogue noticed.

because they have been in existence for over a hundred years—such as Pindar, which was fortunately rescued by York Mailing in August—does not mean that a financially secure past is a good predictor of the future. The current difficult trading conditions are likely to be with us for some time, which is an added incentive to buy your own paper. This way you have your main raw material under control should you be faced with the need to substitute suppliers at short notice. When buying your own paper, for most grades, lead time from order to delivery is about five weeks. An important stage during the commercial cycle is the “free for making date” after which tonnage and reel width/sheet size cannot be changed. However, you can make a virtue out of this by planning well ahead as mills will always prompt you to authorise production. This is a very useful reminder stage for firming up final page content and quantity.
