TOOTH FAIRY T
hank god I remembered! I thought to myself as I stumbled out of bed to find my wallet. It was
three o’clock in the morning.
Twelve hours earlier my son had lost a loose tooth playing soccer. It was a very dramatic play in which he headed the ball into the goal using the side of his face. It would have been even more dramatic if he hadn’t been tying his shoe at the time. He shed a few stoic tears, like a war hero.
Teeth look really insignificant when they no longer belong to a smile. Tat’s what I was thinking when he placed the tiny thing under his pillow and hugged me goodnight.
He doesn’t really believe in the Tooth Fairy, but he still has too many baby teeth in his mouth to admit it. He is shrewd that way. Like how he convinces me to bailout his piggybank with the loose stimulus change in my pocket.
“What are you doing?” asked my wife. “It’s the middle of the night!”
“I am trying to find some Tooth Fairy money; all I have is a twenty. Do you have anything smaller?” “No, you took all of my money yesterday, remember?”
“Do you think I can leave him an IOU?”
A few minutes later I found myself in my son’s room breaking into his piggy bank. It’s only a loan, I told myself, prying out the rubber stopper in the dark. Tat’s when a year’s worth of pocket change spilled noisily to the floor.
My son stirred. “Dad?”
“Go back to sleep,” I whispered, “I am just trying to free up the credit markets.”
I kissed him on the forehead and he looked up at me carefully. I still had the twenty-dollar bill in my hand.
“OK,” he mumbled, reaching under his pillow and handing me his tooth, “Just put the money in my piggy bank.”
Ten he rolled over and went back to sleep. He is shrewd that way.
