Understanding such healing potential of the arts, Pomperaug Woods in Southbury is pleased to host the Connecticut Fourth Annual Senior Juried Art Show on Sat- urday and Sunday, September 24 and 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Themed “The Art of Experience,” this event is designed to highlight the talent, wisdom and vitality of seniors. All submissions were created after the artists’ 70th birthday. It is the first and only show of its type in Connecticut. From fewer than 100 entries in 2009, the event has grown to over 400 submissions from 142 artists in 36 Connecticut towns. Of these, 225 were chosen for the 2011 show, which includes painting, drawing, mixed media and photography. Sixteen winners, four per category, will be selected. Calendars and note cards bearing the winning artists’ works will be sold at the event. Proceeds help fund the continuance of this event. Pomperaug Woods is a not-for-profit independent living retirement community on 22 acres with residence options ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartment homes. Feasting From the Fields Anyone looking for an opportunity to celebrate community, sustainability, the harvest season, and the ongoing works of a local institution is invited to Common Ground High School on Saturday, September 24 for its Feast from the Fields. Be- ginning at 5:30 p.m., participants can enjoy the peak of the fall harvest from Common Ground’s urban farm prepared by some of Connecticut’s top chefs. Savor tastings from restau- rants, farms, and purveyors, harvest dinner, live theater and music, and an auction of experiences celebrating Common Ground’s work as an environmental learning and leadership center. Tickets are $60. Seating is limited. RSVP is required. Connecticut’s only charter high school focused on the


environment, Common Ground seeks to prepare students for success in college and environmental leadership. It is a place where all community members can find connections to the local environment, each other, and opportunities for learning and engagement. Located at the base of West Rock Ridge, the site houses a working organic farm with gardens and ani- mals, and 20 acres of forest with hiking trails, wildlife, and diverse natural habitats. Common Ground seeks to explore urban ecology and develop paths to urban sustainability.

Men at Play – COMEGA #38 A quote attributed to Alan Alda states “The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” Following that concept, the 38th Connecticut Men’s Gathering (COMEGA) will take place at Chester’s Camp Hazen from Friday, September 16 through Sunday, the18th. The idea is for men to have fun over the course of a weekend exploring ideas about life and play, fostering creativity and community, and enriching self and relationships.
