To be creative often requires going out on a limb and having a sense of adventure. My first issue as publisher of Natural Awakenings was the September 2008 Creative Expression edition (online at
NaturalNewHaven.com). Having come from a 20+-year nursing career, I was familiar with many aspects of health and wellness, but had never experienced publishing or owning my own business. All I knew then
was I had a vision of deepening my involvement with integrative medicine and well-being. It was essential to trust my passion and creativity in order to leap into entirely new territory. So it is with great pleasure that I now (thanks to you!!) celebrate the start of my fourth publishing year and our ongoing creativity as a community committed to personal and planetary well-being!
“Creativity can be described as letting go of certainties.” ~Gail Sheehy
The essence of creativity is about transcending the patterned or traditional, and bringing into existence something new. EVERY individual has creative ability, which is automatically expressed in how we live our lives. Creativity occurs in all arts, but also in things such as our words, relationships and communities, activities, and perspectives on our thoughts, feelings, and the world. It not only offers pleasure, but is also a valuable tool for gaining insights, handling life, healing, and finding meaning. My feeling about creativity is that it is about being present, reconnecting with my heart, and letting go of self-judgment and perfectionism. I often stimulate my creativity and connect to my heart while working with my hands in such activities as gardening, cooking, gift-wrapping, or drawing.
“Sometimes creativity just means the daily work of helping others to see a problem in a different way.” ~Joseph Badaracco
The following pages explore ways to create a healthier, more balanced life. Learn about: nurturing self and children through hands-on activities; different types of yoga for sustaining holistic health; eco-friendly fabrics; gluten-free recipes for culinary experimentation; and, more. Find creative ideas for releasing pain or un- doing stagnancy in “Emotional Cleansing” and “A Path to True Insight Write from the Heart.” Are you looking for local opportunities to take action on that which piques your curiosity? Be sure to read through this month’s news briefs, calendars and advertisements.
“You cannot use up creativity. The more you use the more you have.” ~Maya Angelou

Here’s to finding new ways to bring your dreams and hopes to life. Is it any wonder that ingenuity, innovation, inventiveness, and inspiration all begin with “I?”
