exhibits to the public, including the upcoming free exhibit of five Branford artists titled TAKE 5 @ BAC! To kick off the exhibit, which is scheduled to run through Friday, October 28, a preview party and open house will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 30 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat- urday, October 1. The show features painter Scott Paterson, glass blower Ray Matthews, sculptor and painter Dana Bald- win Naumann, textile artist Owen Sea Luckey, and jeweler and sculptor Kristin Merrill. Paterson currently works with figurative themes, painting simple, small, home-made sculp- tures made from wood, cardboard, wire, etc. Matthews has created hand-blown art glass since 1975. He offers classes and furnace rentals at his studio (Glass Hut in Branford). Dana Baldwin Naumann creates fanciful sculpture, mostly crafted from lead sheets coated with copper or zinc patinas. Ms. Luckey has been focusing on “RE-DO”, creations of recycled, gently worn sweaters, deconstructed and embel- lished with one-of-a-kind, hand-knit, felted collars, cuffs, embroidery and antique buttons. Kristin Merrill’s passion is creating art from natural materials.

The BAC gallery is located at 211 Montowese Street in Branford, CT. Hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment. For information, call 203.589.6995, or visit www.branfordartistscooperative.com.

Family Fun at the Fair September 17 and 18, 2011 mark the 37th year of the (new) Orange Country Fair. The town’s first agricultural fair took place on September 15, 1898. Though held for many years, this fair was discontinued circa 1912, and recreated in 1975 given the approaching national bicentennial. Like the early Orange fair, today’s event is primarily agricultural and features horse and oxen pulls, tractor pulls, homing pigeon releases, milking, sheep shearing, craft demonstrations, and exhibits of flowers, fruits, vegetables, baked goods and ani- mals. It includes greased-pole and pedal tractor contests, a dog agility show by The Marvelous Mutts, Kriz Farm’s racing pigs, a juggler/unicyclist, and one of the largest snake and reptile exhibits in the East. There will be live music by The Navels, Flashback and Phil Rosenthal. A pancake breakfast sponsored by Chips Restaurant will be held both morn- ings, with additional food booths offering “typical fair fare.” Orange Fair hours are: Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens. Children 15 and under are free. Parking is free. There is a free shuttle to remote parking sites. No pets or alcohol are allowed.
