automotive or medical remote monitoring can be ex- pected, courtesy of the e-BRAINS research results. By way of example, as a result of heterogeneous integra- tion with other subsystems, an intelligent gas sensor in the car will need only a thousandth of its original volume, while its efficiency will increase 20-fold and it will cost only a fraction of the original price.

The e-BRAINS project aims at sharpening the com- petitive edge of European companies by addressing a large variety of applications as medical, security and safety. The 19 technology partners of the research project are manufacturers with European production sites, Universities and Research institutes in Germa- ny, Norway, Austria, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and the UK. Infineon is responsible for the overall coordination of the e-BRAINS activi- ties.

The research project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2013. The total budget is approximate- ly 15.8 million Euros, of which 5.8 million Euros is financed by the partners from industry and research.

Launch of the Fourth Call for Proposals to EUMINAfab

The European Research Infrastructure EUMINAfab aims at facilitating the access to micro- and nano- technologies for small and medium-sized enterprises. Nine European research institutions have joined a virtual scientific infrastructure facility, offering the

The researchers from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw contributed recently to the development of a relatively simple method allowing the nanotubes exposed to UV to emit red light.

possibility for researchers and developers to study and process a multitude of functional materials. Users can apply over 75 micro- and nanotechno- logies and benefit from scientific experts‘ skills and knowledge.

Advantages for users:

• Use state-of-the-art installations for a wide range of micro- and nanotechnologies: micro nano patterning, thin film deposition, replication und characterisation;

• Gain no fee access to technologies and application-oriented expertise;

• Improve products by applying micro- and nanotechnologies and gain a competitive edge;

• No expensive new equipment needed; • Experiment with new ideas without taking own equipment out of service to make trial runs.
