ayer MaterialScience (PINK: BAYZF) will be showcasing innovative and sustainable develop-

ments for plastics processors under the motto “From Megatrends to Business” at this year‘s Fakuma trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany, on October 18-22, 2011.

Bayer MaterialScience is offering a new “green” high-tech material blend of polycarbonate and poly- ethylene terephthalate (PC+PET) for both large-area vertical and horizontal automobile bodywork parts. The Makroblend®

GR 235M premium material is

made from the highest-quality recyclates. Thanks to its excellent raw material basis, it compares extre- mely well with virgin material. Possible applications are bodywork parts, such as spoilers, trunk lids and skirts, covers for antennas and convertible top com- partments.

Two new technologies enable automotive interior and bodywork applications to be efficiently manuf- actured from high-grade materials in a single process step. Direct-Skinning is a cost-effective process for the finishing of parts with colored decorative polyu- rethane surfaces, including surfaces with light shades and tactile textures.

ollowing the pioneering work in spatial atomic layer deposition and the launch of the revoluti-

onizing research and development tool TFS 200R for continuous ALD in 2009, Beneq has closed the deal for a roll-to-roll ALD system, the Web Coating System WCS 500. The first WCS 500 unit will be delivered to the ASTRaL laboratory at Lappeenranta University of Technology (FIN). Beneq Oy, based in Finland, is a supplier of equip- ment and coating technology. The coating applica- tions of Beneq are based on two enabling nanotech- nology platforms: Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and aerosol coating (nHALO®

and nAERO® ).

Beneq CTO, Dr Tommi Vainio says: “The WCS 500 is a true roll-to-roll ALD platform, designed to enable scale-up from R&D to pilot manufacturing. With the WCS 500, we look to meet especially the growing need for high-quality moisture barriers in the flexible electronics industry. We believe there are multiple opportunities for a product that combines high ALD film quality with the productivity and cost of owner- ship of roll-to-roll manufacturing. WCS 500 accepts webs up to 500 mm in width.”

Professor David Cameron, Director of ASTRaL says: “The WCS 500 tool will open up many new exciting research areas in thin film materials. The new system will allow us to build on our pioneering work on the continuous ALD process and to develop novel roll- to-roll applications where ALD has not been usable up till now.“

The roll-to-roll ALD barrier project, led by LUT, includes Tampere University of Technology (Paper Converting and Packaging Technology) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The project
